The KAI Hat & Head-piece Competition has officially opened its doors for participants seeking to showcase their creative talents. This competition is organized by KAI Corporation, a leading global blade manufacturer recognized for over 40 years of expertise in sewing scissors. Notably, Nobuki Hizume, a designer with the prestigious title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France, will serve as a judge for the contest.

Overview of the Competition


Launched in 2022, this annual design contest invites artists and designers to present their innovative hat and headpiece designs. Participants will undergo a two-phase assessment, beginning with an initial review where selected designs will proceed to the practical production stage. As support, the shortlisted candidates will each receive a production grant of 20,000 yen.

The highlight of the contest is the Grand Prize, which consists of a total of 1.5 million yen, offering winners opportunities including fashion training in Paris or Japan, a set of KAI
sewing scissors, and media interviews to promote their work. Additionally, a special jury prize of 50,000 yen will be awarded to one standout entry, along with KAI scissors for excellence and certificates for other selected candidates.

Theme and Application Process


The overarching theme for the 2025 competition is "Cross-Border". Entries can be submitted from April 23, 2025, at 15:00 until July 21, 2025, at 23:59.

Spotlight on Nobuki Hizume


Nobuki Hizume, the esteemed judge of this competition, graduated top of his class from Bunka Fashion College's Apparel Design program in 2004, leading him to Italy to showcase his designs as a designer for a leading underwear manufacturer. Upon returning to Japan, he gained acclaim for designing hats and headpieces that adorned musicians and theatrical productions. In 2009, he established a base in France and has since crafted headwear for numerous prestigious collections, earning the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 2019.

Judge Profile: Yo Suzuki


Serving as CMO and CCO at KAI, Yo Suzuki also holds the position of CCO at the Swedish creative agency Great Works.
