Discovering the World of Fragrance at ATELIER MUJI
The renowned company Ryohin Keikaku, known for its MUJI brand, will host an intriguing exhibition titled "Listening to Fragrance" from December 19, 2025, to March 15, 2026. This exhibition will take place at ATELIER MUJI GINZA, located in the heart of Tokyo. Visitors can expect a stunning exploration of how fragrances have intertwined with human experience over the centuries.
MUJI has garnered a reputation for creating products that harmonize with contemporary living environments. Alongside furniture and home goods, the brand offers a variety of fragrance products, including essential oils, aroma candles, room fragrances, and incense. The rich history of scent culture in Japan spans nearly 1,500 years, with deep-rooted traditions that link back to ancient practices. Literature such as the celebrated "Tale of Genji" elegantly documents the integration of fragrances into daily life during the Heian period, reflecting a culture that cherished the sensory experiences of everyday existence.
This exhibition aims to rekindle an appreciation of historical scents through five distinct lenses—life, history, experience, curation, and language. Each viewpoint provides insights into our relationship with fragrance, prompting visitors to consider what constitutes an inviting scent and what makes us feel comfortable. This experimental endeavor invites attendees to engage with the abstract yet profound world of olfactory sensations in innovative ways.
At the exhibition, guests will have the opportunity to explore MUJI’s fragrance-related products and the stories behind their creation. Additionally, the display will reflect on the evolution of scent in everyday life throughout history. Patrons will also encounter a unique installation known as the "Scent of the Exhibition," crafted by the talented staff at Ryohin Keikaku using various words inspired by the exhibit. This interactive setup encourages visitors to connect with fragrances on a personal level, enhancing the overall experience.
