Exploring the Revival of Fukushima's Agriculture Through Renewable Energy
On July 13, 2026, the co-op group Pal System Fukushima, based in Iwaki City, is set to host a free documentary screening titled "Hinata no Farmers: Fukushima and Hope" at Iwaki PIT. This event runs from 1:45 PM to 4:00 PM and will feature a discussion with local farmers following the screening. This initiative comes 15 years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster, aiming to explore the intersection of energy and agriculture with community engagement.
A New Era for Farming Post-Nuclear Disaster
The documentary highlights the challenges faced by farmers who, due to radiation from the nuclear accident, had to cease cultivating their lands. However, with the innovative practice of solar sharing—installing solar panels above cultivated fields—these farmers have revitalized their agricultural practices while addressing key issues like crop quality and worker safety. Solar sharing serves to prevent overheating from direct sunlight, thus maintaining stable crop conditions and reducing the risks of heat-related illnesses for those working in the fields.
Through this film, viewers will witness a new possibility for agriculture that balances renewable energy production with crop cultivation. The documentary portrays young farmers who, despite facing numerous challenges, maintain a positive and forward-thinking approach to their work.
An Insightful Talk Show
The post-screening talk will feature Daisuke Ito, the CEO of J-Lap, a company that advocates for an integrated agricultural approach ranging from production to processing, distribution, and sales—all practiced in Sukagawa City, Fukushima. J-Lap not only grows rice but also supplies cucumbers to Pal System. With solar energy helping the company achieve total self-sufficiency in energy consumption, they implement solar sharing practices to promote energy independence and the push for renewable energy. This event will provide real-life examples of innovative, sustainable agricultural practices.

The Creative Minds Behind the Documentary
Directed by Hiroyasu Obara, who has consistently documented the resilience of people in Fukushima post-disaster, this film continues the trajectory of his previous works. His earlier documentary, "The Judge Who Stopped the Nuclear Reactor and The Farmers Who Halted It", showcased the dangers of nuclear power while bringing to light the farmers revitalizing their livelihoods through solar energy production. "Hinata no Farmers: Fukushima and Hope" further explores the story of farmer Megumi Kondo, focusing on her challenges in reclaiming abandoned land through solar sharing.
The film’s theme song and narration are provided by Emi Shirazaki, vocalist of the music group
