Discover the GUM Collection by both Paris
The renowned footwear brand, both Paris, has unveiled a fresh collection named 'GUM', led by creative director Mats Rombaut. This new line aims to push the boundaries of rubber footwear design. The exclusive preview of this collection will occur at their Aoyama flagship store on August 29, 2026, with a public release on the official both Japan online store starting August 30, 2026, at 11 AM.
The GUM collection takes a significant evolutionary leap from the geometrical designs established by their iconic 'GAO' model, venturing into more natural and organic aesthetics. As part of both's continued exploration of rubber material, the collection embodies the brand's next chapter in innovative footwear.
Design Inspirations and New Rubber Sole
The inspiration behind the GUM collection is the rubber material itself, rather than a pre-defined shoe form. This contrast to their previous architectural straight-line beauty is showcased through the more fluid and organic designs offered in the GUM range. Central to this transformation is the newly developed 'GUM Sole' which features a lightweight EVA midsole combined with natural rubber pods resembling cellular shapes and a TPU structure, enhancing both lightness and grip. Natural rubber efficiently engages with the ground, ensuring stable walks.
Moreover, a wave pattern applied to the sole is mirrored in the upper part, creating a cohesive design across the entire shoe. The hallmark of both’s craftsmanship is represented by dual rows of hand-stitching on the heel, symbolizing the brand's philosophy of duality and coexistence—the light meeting the heavy; the industrial meeting the organic. This visual representation emphasizes the tension between contrasting elements.
The GUM collection distinguishes itself by opting for an identity rooted in material and structure rather than bold logos or embellishments. As Mats Rombaut expresses, "I believe the importance lies not in the logo but in an attitude or presence. I hope these shoes provide wearers with confidence and lightness in their steps."
Launch Event in Omotesando
To celebrate the launch, both Paris hosted a special event at their Aoyama flagship store. Esteemed shoemaker Vukotić Dragan, who has been developing shoe technologies for both since 2016, discussed the meticulous process of bringing a shoe from conception to completion while emphasizing the craftsmanship treasured by the brand.
The event was uplifted by a performance from YAMATO, and included a roster of notable guests from the fashion and creative fields, such as Ren Okada and Morgan Kuroto.
