Exciting Digital Sports Event 'Challenge SASSEN' in Kitakyushu
On July 26-27, 2025, the Kitakyushu Children's Museum was abuzz with excitement as it hosted the event titled "Challenge SASSEN," organized by the Kitakyushu branch of the All Japan Sassen Association. This two-day experience allowed participants to delve into the thrilling world of SASSEN, a next-generation digital sword fighting sport. With a total of 680 participants—327 on the first day and 359 on the second—this event showcased the power of engaging, technology-based sports.
The participants ranged in age from as young as two years to middle school students, with many parents and adults joining in the fun. The atmosphere was electric as families competed against each other, and it was not uncommon to see repeat visitors, with some families returning for both days or participating in over ten matches in just one day. To ensure the safety of younger children, the event implemented a special "full blade reaction mode" for those aged five and under, allowing them to enjoy the matches safely.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of Kazuyama Yamamoto, a former professional baseball player and the director of the museum. His first encounter with SASSEN attracted considerable attention, as he showcased serious focus and impressive skill in the matches, quickly becoming a talk of the town.
The organizers emphasized their commitment to further developing and popularizing SASSEN through educational programs, experiential events, and recreational activities in various settings across the country. This initiative aims to introduce more people to the joys of digital sports, making them accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
