Hydro One Collaborates with First Nations on Essential Transmission Line Project

In a transformative move for energy infrastructure in Ontario, Hydro One Networks Inc. has received a directive from the province's Minister of Energy and Electrification to proceed with the construction of a crucial transmission line stretching approximately 260 kilometers from Wawa to Timmins. This project is designed to address the anticipated surge in electricity demand in Northern Ontario, driven by community electrification, industrial growth, and the expanding mining sector focused on critical minerals.

David Lebeter, President and CEO of Hydro One, emphasized the importance of this initiative. He stated, "Electricity is the backbone of our economy and Hydro One provides the power needed to support daily life and attract new growth and investment in communities across the province.” He also highlighted Hydro One's commitment to prioritizing Indigenous partnerships and reconciliation throughout the project.

The decision to select Hydro One as the transmission developer was made after thorough assessments of its proposal, which included consultations with Indigenous communities and other stakeholders. As part of this project, proximate First Nations will have the opportunity to invest in a 50% equity stake, taking advantage of Hydro One’s partnership model.

Chief Gauthier of the Missanabie Cree First Nation stated, "This project will power progress and create lasting opportunities for all our people," reinforcing the positive impact on local communities. Additionally, the Wabun Tribal Council expressed its satisfaction with the decision, stating that it enhances the transmission capacity in a grid system that is essential for future growth. The Chiefs involved include those from Brunswick House, Chapleau Ojibway, Flying Post, Matachewan, and Mattagami First Nations, all of whom represent a commitment to collaborative growth.

The construction of the new transmission line will initially be energized at 230 kV and aims to be operational by the end of 2030. This project aligns perfectly with the Independent Electricity System Operator's forecast, which predicts a staggering 75% increase in electricity demand across Ontario by 2050. Once completed, the new transmission line will not only boost Ontario's clean energy profile but also enhance the appeal of the province for new residents and investment.

Minister Stephen Lecce remarked, "Our government is supporting the incredible growth in Timmins and across Northeastern Ontario by accelerating the development of a new transmission line that will power new homes, businesses, and mines." Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, pointed out that this initiative not only strengthens Ontario's economy but also fosters genuine reconciliation with Indigenous communities through collaborative energy projects.

Furthermore, Timmins’ Mayor Michelle Boileau noted that this project would be pivotal for large-scale development and address increased energy demands, thereby unlocking the city’s economic potential and ensuring sustainable energy for its current and future residents.
