CNCF Kubestronaut Program and Its Impact on Cloud Native Talent in Asia

The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) has recently made headlines with its ongoing Kubestronaut program, which focuses on nurturing cloud native talent across the globe, particularly in Asia. With the burgeoning demand for cloud-native applications, as reported by Portworx in its Voice of Kubernetes Experts Report 2024, approximately 80% of organizations are planning to build their new applications on cloud-native platforms in the forthcoming five years. However, the prevailing skills gap has become a significant barrier for 75% of organizations adopting Kubernetes, highlighting the necessity for enhanced educational programs and certifications.

Launched in November 2024, the Kubestronaut program has recognized nearly 1,800 individuals from over 100 countries, with a substantial participation from Asia. To date, the program has honored 280 Kubestronauts from this region alone, demonstrating impressive engagement from countries such as China, where 29 individuals have been recognized, and Japan, with 63 participants achieving this status. To honor these accomplishments, CNCF is coordinating celebrations during KubeCon + CloudNativeCon events across China and Japan. The Golden Kubestronaut segment of this initiative represents an elevated achievement, where individuals must complete all 13 CNCF certifications alongside the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) certification. Since its inception in April, this program has gained traction in Asia, with nearly 30% of the 54 Golden Kubestronauts being from the region, encompassing participants from China, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and multiple other countries. The recognition not only includes branded gear like commemorative backpacks and beanies but also grants ongoing support through a ThriveOne subscription and significant discounts for future CNCF certification endeavors.
