Documentary Film on Kawai Kanjirō
The Japan-US Arts Promotion Association has recently announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on "READYFOR". This initiative aims to produce a documentary film about Kawai Kanjirō, a prominent Japanese ceramic artist of the 20th century, in anticipation of his first solo exhibition overseas. The target amount for this crowdfunding effort is set at 5 million yen, with the campaign closing on April 30, 2026.
The Exhibition: Bridging Kyoto and New York Through Art
From March 10, 2026, the Japan Society in New York will host the exhibition titled
Kawai Kanjirō: House to House, showcasing over 130 pieces from the Kawai Kanjirō Memorial Museum in Kyoto. This historic event marks Kawai’s debut solo exhibition outside Japan, taking place shortly before the 60th anniversary of his passing.
Recognizing the importance of this significant cultural event, the Japan-US Arts Promotion Association aims to document not just the exhibition but also the reaction it garners from American audiences and ceramic artists. The envisioned film will be a 4K visual representation that captures the essence of Japanese culture as it resonates within the contemporary American art scene. The Association intends for the film to be preserved in institutions like the National Diet Library and to be screened in educational settings around the globe.
Why Crowdfunding?
Making this independent film presents financial challenges, making it crucial to gather support from like-minded patrons. This crowdfunding drive seeks contributions from those who share the vision of promoting Kawai Kanjirō's artistry and philosophy to future generations.
