Texas Association of Community Health Plans Kicks Off Healthy Texan Week with Innovative Health Initiatives

Texas Association of Community Health Plans Celebrates Healthy Texan Week

The Texas Association of Community Health Plans (TACHP) recently inaugurated Healthy Texan Week, an annual event that runs from May 4 to May 11. This year marks the third edition of the event, designed to enhance health awareness and promote wellness throughout Texas. Targeting community health, the campaign features a variety of activities including health screenings, nutrition education programs, and fitness initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall well-being of Texans.

This weeklong celebration unites various stakeholders such as healthcare providers, community organizations, schools, businesses, and local governments, all working together to foster a healthier Texas. The theme of this year’s event is driven by the understanding that community-based approaches are essential to address health challenges effectively. During Healthy Texan Week 2026, participants across the state will have access to free health screenings, vaccination clinics, farmers market tours, fitness challenges, and educational activities focused on mental health.

Janet Walker, President and CEO of TACHP, emphasized the pivotal role of nutrition and innovative approaches in healthcare, stating, "Healthy Texan Week is the perfect opportunity to focus on the need for innovative community-based approaches to nutrition and health care in Texas." One of the most notable initiatives this year is the introduction of the Medically Tailored Meals (MTMs) pilot project, sanctioned by the Texas legislature. This program aims to provide tailored nutritional support for pregnant women managing chronic health conditions, ultimately improving health outcomes while making care more affordable.

Celia Cole, CEO of Feeding Texas, added, "Good health starts with good nutrition, and our network is committed to ensuring all Texans have access to the healthy food they require." The pilot program introduced through House Bill 26 will enable Medicaid managed care organizations to offer essential nutrition support services, including medically tailored meals for eligible pregnant beneficiaries with conditions like gestational diabetes and hypertension. These meals are carefully crafted by registered dietitians to fit the specific nutritional needs of individuals, thus addressing both health management and access to nutritious foods.

Healthy Texan Week not only supports the MTM initiative but also serves as an essential platform providing healthcare guidance and resources. Community members who might not have been aware of available healthcare services can gain invaluable insights during the week’s events.

Healthcare experts emphasize the importance of participation in such community-driven programs. Events are scheduled to take place across numerous locations in Texas and are designed to engage individuals of all ages in meaningful ways. Local events can significantly increase awareness and promote healthy lifestyle choices.
