Launching 'LUUP': A New Sharing Service of E-Scooters and E-Bikes in Kawasaki City

Luup's New Sharing Service Launch in Kawasaki City

On July 14, 2025, at 11 AM, Luup Co., headquartered in Tokyo, will initiate its innovative sharing service for electric scooters and electric assist bicycles, termed 'LUUP', in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This service aims to address the growing mobility needs of the city's residents and visitors.

In collaboration with Tokio Marine Holdings, LUUP will host a safety training and test ride event at Kawasaki Spark, located in the heart of Kawasaki City. This event is designed for the general public and aims to promote safe riding practices among new users. As part of the service, riders can enjoy seamless travel between Kawasaki, Yokohama, and Tokyo, selecting different starting and ending points in these three cities.

Background of LUUP

Luup's mission is to create an infrastructure that turns city-wide spaces into easily navigable areas, fostering seamless urban mobility through its electric micro-mobility sharing services. The company focuses on providing high-density parking ports situated across major urban and regional areas in Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Kobe. This initiative enables quick and convenient access to electric scooters and assist bicycles for commutes, shopping trips, and tourism.

Kawasaki City faces unique challenges in urban mobility due to its vast expanse and the coexistence of urban and suburban environments. Traditionally, transportation within the city has relied heavily on buses, trains, and personal vehicles. However, with an increase in population and urban development demands, coupled with factors such as bus route reductions and an aging population, the need for alternative mobility solutions has become more pressing.

By introducing LUUP in Kawasaki City, the company aims to facilitate better transportation options for residents and enhance the local economy, ensuring smoother commuting for those visiting for business or leisure.

Features of LUUP

LUUP operates more than 13,900 ports across various regions, utilizing smaller vehicle designs that allow for port installation in limited spaces. The service focuses on short-distance travel, allowing users to reserve a port ahead of their trip via the app, which prevents congestion at particular ports. Users are required to take a photo of their vehicle parked correctly at a designated port upon returning it, ensuring that the area remains tidy and visually appealing.
