CATL Unveils the Revolutionary 9 MWh TENER Stack Energy Storage System
In a significant development for the energy sector, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has officially launched the TENER Stack, a cutting-edge energy storage system with an unprecedented capacity of 9 MWh. This innovative solution was revealed at the ees Europe 2025 event, marking a strategic milestone that redefines large-scale energy storage capabilities.
The TENER Stack is specifically engineered to meet the rapidly increasing global energy demands driven by AI-powered data centers and industrial electrification. This new storage system is poised to assist utilities, developers, and industrial users in maximizing the economic value derived from every square meter of installation space available.
"CATL has always been at the forefront of the energy transition," stated Amanda Xu, CTO of ESS and president of ESS Europe CATL. "To meet the demands of a high-energy-density BESS system with a minimalist footprint and easy AC-side configuration, we are pleased to present the TENER energy storage solution." This system overcomes existing limitations regarding energy capacity and transport logistics, achieving breakthroughs in space utilization, energy efficiency, and overall costs.
A Unique Capacity and Seamless Compatibility
The TENER Stack incorporates CATL’s high-energy-density cells featuring a zero degradation technology over a five-year lifespan. This allows for a remarkable 45% improvement in volumetric utilization and a projected 50% increase in energy density compared to conventional 20-foot container systems. With the ability to store up to 9 MWh, the TENER Stack can charge approximately 150 electric vehicles or power the average German household for six years.
In terms of compatibility, the TENER Stack supports both centralized and chain architecture of energy conversion systems (PCS). This dual technology ensures seamless integration with existing AC-side equipment, offering a wider range of applications across the network.
The superior spatial efficiency afforded by the TENER Stack presents significant economic advantages. For instance, deploying 800 MWh of storage using TENER Stack requires one-third fewer containers compared to traditional 6 MWh systems. This translates to reduced PCS units and hidden costs associated with oversized systems, ultimately increasing land-use efficiency by 40%. Developers can anticipate a total construction cost optimization of around 20% for energy stations.
Transportation Without Compromise
To tackle the logistical challenges associated with transporting containers weighing over 36 tons—a legal threshold in many countries—CATL has innovated a "two-in-one" concept. Each half-height unit is carefully designed to stay under 36 tons, ensuring compliance with transport regulations across 99% of global markets.
This innovative design facilitates standard shipping methods, including regular containers, which drastically cuts down waiting times and specialized transport costs by up to 35%. With a lower center of gravity and flexibility for low-height routes, the TENER Stack is adept at navigating unique transport scenarios, including bridges and rural areas, showcasing the benefits of its structural design.
Advanced Safety Standards and Thermal Management
With fire safety under intense scrutiny globally, the TENER Stack leverages CATL’s robust LFP battery chemistry, celebrated for its inherent thermal stability. Enhanced gas sensors provide 40% greater sensitivity, enabling suppression system activation 35% faster. A novel three-layer insulation design boosts fire resistance to two hours, while the system meets IEEE693 seismic standards, able to withstand 9 magnitude earthquakes and category 5 hurricanes.
Additionally, its airborne thermal management system (TMS) decreases thermal radiation, land and maintenance costs, while limiting noise levels to 65 dB(A) at one meter—ideal for urban use.
Beyond Just Batteries: A Vision for Energy
As of November 2024, CATL's ESS products have been deployed in over 1,700 projects worldwide, across all climate zones and operational environments. In response to evolving customer needs, CATL introduced TENER, a containerized energy storage system, and TENER FLEX, a rack-mounted system for flexible deployment.
The TENER Stack builds on the proven performance of CATL's previous TENER and TENER FLEX models, marrying the advantages of prior iterations with enhanced capacity and transportability. With the TENER Stack, CATL reaffirms its commitment to helping global partners expedite the energy transition, providing more power in less space, safely and sustainably.
"TENER Stack is giant, flexible, reliable, and quiet. We are not just delivering a storage product but an energy accessibility solution applicable globally," said Hank Zhao, CTO of ESS Europe CATL. "9 MWh is not the limit of energy capacity or space. In the future, every advancement in energy density will yield greater energy value from a smaller footprint."
