Remembering Yvonne Fedderson: A Lifelong Advocate for Children in Need
In Memory of Yvonne Fedderson: A Legacy of Hope and Advocacy
Yvonne Fedderson, beloved co-founder of Childhelp, passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy in the fight against child abuse. Born on April 7, 1935, in Glendale, California, Fedderson transitioned from a promising career in Hollywood to dedicating her life to helping the most vulnerable among us — children.
Graduating from the Pasadena Playhouse, Fedderson, also known as Yvonne Lime in her acting days, was adept at capturing audiences' hearts in shows like "Ozzie and Harriet" and films such as "Loving You," alongside Elvis Presley. However, her heart was destined for a greater calling than the silver screen. In 1959, Yvonne and her friend Sara O'Meara established International Orphans, Inc., which evolved into what we now know as Childhelp.
The organization began with a mission to provide support for orphans in post-typhoon Japan and has since grown into a national leader in child advocacy, intervention, and treatment services. Childhelp has positively impacted the lives of over 14 million children and families grappling with abuse and neglect.
Fedderson's vision for Childhelp stemmed from a deep belief that addressing child abuse required the involvement of many compassionate hearts. Under her leadership, the organization expanded its programs, including the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline and the education initiative, Speak Up Be Safe. Her unwavering dedication earned her numerous accolades, including the National Children's Alliance's Champions of Children Award and the State of California Legislature's Woman of the World Award.
Sara O'Meara, Fedderson’s lifelong friend and co-founder of Childhelp, reflected on their profound partnership, sharing, "Yvonne was my dearest friend and my partner in this mission for more than six decades... Her compassion and belief in the power of love shaped Childhelp from its earliest days."
Fedderson’s influence stretched beyond her philanthropic efforts. For over 30 years, she managed Don Fedderson Productions, preserving the legacies of iconic television shows such as "Family Affair" and "My Three Sons." Despite her busy career, her heart remained with Childhelp, influencing policy and advocacy for children at risk.
Childhelp Celebrity Ambassador Kathie Lee Gifford expressed, "Yvonne lived a life overflowing with extraordinary purpose and grace... She believed in hope and healing."
The sadness of her passing is felt deeply among those she touched. John Stamos, another Childhelp Ambassador, remarked, "Yvonne led with love... She helped save and protect millions of children who never would have had a voice without her." Her compassionate spirit and leadership have left an indelible mark on society, challenging all to continue her mission.
As Childhelp COO Michael Medoro stated, "While we mourn this loss, we celebrate a life defined by purpose, resilience, and unrelenting faith in humanity". Fedderson's life exemplified both grace and tenacity, encapsulating the message of hope that she dedicated her life to share.
The legacy of Yvonne Fedderson will live on through the countless children who have been impacted by her work. As Childhelp continues to grow and evolve, it carries forward her vision — one that prioritizes compassion and emphasizes the importance of every child's voice.
In memory of Yvonne Fedderson, let us honor her remarkable contributions by committing ourselves to the cause she championed most passionately: ensuring every child is safe, loved, and has the chance to thrive.
