The vibrant capital city of Kuala Lumpur recently hosted a significant event, the China-ASEAN Media and Think Tank Forum. On April 14, 2025, representatives from China and the ten member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) gathered to discuss avenues for joint development and collaboration. The theme, "Strengthening ASEAN-China Cooperation," set the tone for a forum dedicated to fostering partnership and addressing shared regional challenges.
During the opening speech, Malaysia's Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof emphasized the unwavering commitment of Malaysia to a cohesive ASEAN-China partnership. He asserted that such cooperation is essential for regional stability and the resilience of the global economy. Yusof hailed the forum as an invaluable exchange platform, where media and think tanks play a crucial role in informing policies and promoting regional harmony. He quoted Chinese President Xi Jinping, stating, "Good neighbors wish each other well," underlining the importance of collaborative efforts among neighboring countries.
Lyu Yansong, editor-in-chief of Xinhua News Agency, echoed these sentiments. He highlighted that the aspirations of the people of China and ASEAN countries are aligned in their desire to progress cooperatively. According to Lyu, the bilateral relationship has transcended mere economic ties to become a vital force within the Global South, thereby holding significant global implications. The potential to build a peaceful and prosperous future, characterized by mutual respect and engagement, is a shared goal articulated by both parties.
In a video address, Ouyang Yujing, the Chinese ambassador to Malaysia, reinforced President Xi's vision for a community with a shared future for humanity. He encouraged those in attendance to actively disseminate narratives surrounding China-Malaysia and broader China-ASEAN cooperation, framing it as a contribution toward global betterment.
Wong Chun Wai, the chairman of the Malaysian National News Agency, highlighted the importance of civilizational exchanges between ASEAN and China, given their rich cultural landscapes. He advocated for using this cultural synergy to set precedent for unity among Global South countries. Wong also highlighted the necessity for enhanced collaboration in media practices, particularly emphasizing the adoption of artificial intelligence for improving mass communication efforts.
The forum, co-hosted by Xinhua News Agency and Bernama, attracted approximately 260 representatives from over 160 organizations, including government agencies, enterprises, and media outlets from both China and ASEAN countries. This diverse array of participants underscores the commitment from various sectors to engage in constructive dialogue and cooperation.
At the forum's conclusion, the Xinhua Institute, a respected think tank associated with Xinhua News Agency, presented a report titled, "RCEP and the Vision of the Maritime Silk Road: New Frontiers for China-ASEAN Cooperation." This report aims to provide insights into how regional integration can pave the way for greater collaboration between China and ASEAN nations.
