Experience the Richness of Traditional Arts at Gakuichigakuza: A Celebration of Words, Song, and Dance

Discover the Magic of Traditional Arts at Gakuichigakuza

On November 1, 2025, the exquisite traditional arts of Japan will be brought to life at the prestigious Hozo Nohgakudo in Tokyo, with the fifth installment of the Gakuichigakuza series hosted by the non-profit organization ACT.JT. Tickets went on sale starting August 9, 2025, across various ticket platforms.

Background of the Event

The Gakuichigakuza event was initiated by ACT.JT in 2021 with the aim of showcasing the diversity and richness of Japanese cultural arts. The term "gaku" refers to various forms of performing arts that have evolved uniquely in Japan, having originated from various continental traditions. Inspired by the commercial reforms of Nobunaga Oda, which encouraged a vibrant marketplace of culture and trade, Gakuichigakuza aims to attract audiences by presenting both traditional arts from Japan, as well as music and dances that have traveled via the Silk Road from countries such as China, Korea, India, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Event Overview

With a renewed interest in traditional Japanese arts fueled by films and other media, this year's Gakuichigakuza will highlight the captivating forms of expression through three main categories: “Words,” “Songs,” and “Dance.” Each segment aims to evoke emotions and resonate deeply with the audience.

Part One: Words - Chushingura Edition

The first part will introduce the classic story of Chushingura, known for its themes of loyalty and sacrifice. This will include:
  • - Gidayu (Narrative music) performed by Takyu Takemoto and Shamisen player Tsurusawa Yoshizumi, featuring a powerful rendition of a scene from Kanadehon Chushingura, the tale of the loyal retainers.
  • - Rokyoku (Storytelling with Shamisen accompaniment) by Haruno Kunimoto and Tamagawa Suzu, presenting a poignant farewell on Nanbuzaka.
  • - Satsuma Biwa (Narrative accompanied by the Biwa) performed by Yumekiyo Tsurushin, bringing the play's themes to life with strong vocals.

Part Two: Songs and Dance

The event’s second part will showcase a vibrant array of Ryukyu classical music and dance, traditional Okinawan performances, and various expressions of lyrical art:
  • - Ryukyu Classical Music performed by Kinna Riichi with the Sansem and Hirata Dai.
  • - Ryukyu Dance, featuring a classic female dance, and other choreographed numbers.
  • - Shigin (Poetry recitation), where poetic verses of historical significance will be artistically recited.
  • - Ginbu (Poetry Dance) combines sword presentation with lyrical expression.
  • - Kenbu (Sword Dance) portrayed through rhythmic expressions to poetry recitation.
