AIKO Achieves Reduced VAT Eligibility for Solar Modules
In a significant move for the green energy sector, AIKO has announced that its photovoltaic (PV) modules are now eligible for a reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) rate of 5.5% in France, according to the recently implemented PPE2 V2 certification. This achievement positions AIKO as a pioneer for residential solar systems in France, enabling homeowners to take full advantage of this financial incentive that fosters sustainability.
Typically, the VAT rate applied to PV systems for households in France stands at 20%. However, the reduced rate of 5.5% is exclusively available for installations up to 9 kWp that comply with stringent PPE2 V2 criteria. It’s worth noting that installations exceeding this threshold will continue to incur the standard VAT rate. Two of AIKO's models, the AlKO-A-MCE60Db and AIKO-A-MCE54Db, are now officially listed in the Certisolis registry as eligible for this VAT reduction.
What is PPE2 V2?
PPE2 V2, or Product Environmental Footprint 2, Version 2, is a stringent environmental certification that was introduced in France in September 2025. To qualify for the reduced VAT rate, a PV module must meet specific conditions, which include:
- - A maximum carbon footprint of 530 kg CO₂ equivalent per kWp, calculated according to the PPE2 V2 methodology—this is a particularly challenging requirement.
- - Material thresholds: Silver content must be below 14 mg/W, lead below 0.1%, and cadmium below 0.01%.
- - Complete traceability: The production location, silicon origin, and manufacturing chain must be documented, auditable, and accompanied by a 12-month certification.
Achieving the carbon threshold of 530 kg CO₂eq/kWp is an exceptional challenge and necessitates that manufacturers decarbonize their entire supply chain, from polysilicon to the finished module. Currently, very few modules on the market can meet these rigorous standards.
AIKO, however, has successfully adhered to all PPE2 V2 requirements while still providing modules that boast an industry-leading efficiency of 24.4% to 24.5%. This efficiency is crucial for maximizing yields in areas where roof space is limited, paired with an aesthetic, all-black design. This combination enables French homeowners to experience shorter payback times and greater returns on investment.
Competitive Edge in the French Market
The PPE2 V2 certification sets a high bar that only a handful of manufacturers have been able to clear. AIKO's accomplishment showcases its dedication to sustainable, low-carbon production methods. The implications for the French residential market are profound; homeowners will now have access to high-quality, highly efficient solar installations at significantly lower costs without compromising on performance.
