Future and Hokkaido University Collaborate on AI-Driven Surgical Support for Hip Fractures

Future and Hokkaido University Team Up for AI Surgical Innovation

Future Co., Ltd., based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, led by President and CEO Yasufumi Kanemaru, has partnered with Hokkaido University, located in Sapporo, to embark on an innovative research project designed to revolutionize the treatment of proximal femoral fractures. This collaborative endeavor, titled "Creation of an AI-Equipped Fracture Treatment System Supporting Rapid Diagnosis and Surgical Planning," has garnered approval from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) under the 2023-2024 medical device research project category aimed at young and female researchers.

Proximal femoral fractures predominantly occur in elderly individuals suffering from osteoporosis and are often triggered by falls. These injuries frequently lead to prolonged immobility and demand quick surgical intervention to avoid complications related to pre-existing medical conditions. Thus, it becomes critical for healthcare providers to thoroughly assess the stability of the fractured bone and select the appropriate surgical approaches and implants, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients.

In this joint project, the expertise and clinical data of Hokkaido University Hospital's orthopedic department will be fused with Future’s advanced AI technology to create a Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) system specifically for proximal femoral fractures. Recently, VSP has gained significant attention as a technology that can dramatically enhance both the accuracy and safety of surgical procedures, especially when integrated with surgical assistance robots.

The research will focus on developing automated reconstruction algorithms for bone fragments, as well as AI-based systems aimed at selecting and estimating the appropriate sizes for implants. By evaluating CT images and other diagnostic data, the AI will assess the stability of fractures, ultimately assisting in the identification of suitable implants for surgery.

The successful development of this system could transform the surgical landscape by enabling even less experienced or specialized surgeons to create rapid and precise treatment plans. Consequently, this initiative aims to reduce surgery duration, lower the incidence of complications, and promote the faster reintegration of patients into society following their recovery.

About Future Co., Ltd.

Future is a social design company that operates on two key pillars: IT consulting & services and business innovation. With a specialized team called the Strategic AI Group, Future harnesses cutting-edge AI technology to provide tailored consulting and implementation strategies aimed at solving complex challenges. In addition, the Healthcare Innovation Group concentrates on promoting digital transformation and innovation in the healthcare sector, striving to improve operational efficiency and streamline processes.

In collaboration with Hokkaido University, Future has already achieved a significant milestone by developing a machine learning model capable of detecting fracture lines and types with diagnostic precision equivalent to that of orthopedic specialists. Results from these findings were shared in February 2025 at the ORS 2025 conference.

Looking ahead, Future remains committed to leveraging technology in contributing to the advancement and problem-solving in the medical field.
