DuPont Enhances Healthcare Manufacturing Facility in Costa Rica with New Sterile Packaging Capabilities

DuPont Expands Healthcare Manufacturing in Costa Rica

DuPont, the renowned innovation leader, has recently announced an expansion at its healthcare manufacturing site located in Heredia, Costa Rica. This noteworthy initiative involves an increase of 16,000 square feet, which significantly enhances the company’s capacity to produce sterile packaging for medical devices. The project not only expands the facility's extruded medical tubing operations but also marks the introduction of sterile packaging production in Costa Rica for the very first time.

The expansion is primarily aimed at serving healthcare clients across the Caribbean and broader American markets. The new facility will accommodate additional extrusion machinery and production lines designed specifically for the creation of high-demand sterile packaging solutions, including pouches, header bags, and lids, all utilizing DuPont's innovative Tyvek® material. This material is well-known for its superior properties which make it ideal for medical packaging.

In line with global standards, the newly expanded area has obtained ISO 13485:2016 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. This ensures that all processes and products are underpinned by rigorous quality standards and protocols. The technical, assembly, and packaging teams working within the facility are trained to uphold the highest levels of quality assurance throughout the production lifecycle. The site is now operating 24/7 to meet the growing demands of current and prospective customers.

James Chambers, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Fluids & Flexibles at Spectrum Plastics Group, a DuPont Business, expressed pride in this milestone. “With this expansion, we are now the first company in Costa Rica and the Caribbean to produce fluid management and sterile packaging offerings for the medical device industry,” he remarked. He emphasized that this development solidifies DuPont’s position as a trusted partner within the healthcare supply chain, enhancing their robust portfolio of offerings tailored to the medical market.

DuPont's diverse offerings for the healthcare sector encompass a range of advanced products and solutions. These include extruded tubing, subassemblies, sophisticated catheter assembly capabilities, medical balloons, and skin contact devices. Their innovative portfolio extends to smart wearables, additive manufacturing techniques, laser processing, precision injection-molding, and comprehensive medical device fabrication. Each solution is designed to fulfill varied healthcare application needs while ensuring medical-grade performance standards.

The expansion aligns with DuPont's commitment to innovation in healthcare applications, combining their extensive materials science expertise with advanced technology to deliver comprehensive solutions that cater to the nuanced demands of healthcare environments.

In a broader context, Spectrum Plastics Group has been part of DuPont since August 2023, bringing more than six decades of specialized knowledge in advanced polymer processing and medical device manufacturing. The group is recognized for its precision extrusion techniques as well as specialty injection molding and complex catheter fabrication. It has become a reliable supplier for critical polymer-based components and finished devices in the medical industry, showcasing proven quality and excellence.

Overall, DuPont continues to solidify its leadership in the healthcare sector by investing in expansions, innovations, and advanced manufacturing capabilities that support the evolving needs of global healthcare operations.
