Heaven Hill Springs Distillery Opening: A New Chapter in American Whiskey
On September 4, 2025, Heaven Hill Brands proudly celebrated the grand opening of the Heaven Hill Springs Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky. This state-of-the-art facility signifies a major milestone in the distillation of bourbon and marks the return of whiskey production to the area after a long hiatus since 1996. With a staggering investment of $200 million, the distillery aims to cement Heaven Hill's place as the largest independent bourbon producer globally.
The new distillery commenced production as of April 2025 and, together with the existing Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, significantly boosts Heaven Hill's bourbon production capabilities. Kate Latts, Co-President of Heaven Hill Brands, emphasized the importance of this distillery as a long-term investment not only in their products but in the community of Bardstown itself.
Investment and Features of the Distillery
The Heaven Hill Springs Distillery is designed to support an initial production capacity of 150,000 barrels of bourbon annually, with plans to scale up to 450,000 barrels in the future. The facility boasts advanced technology, including:
- - A 60-foot Vendome copper still capable of producing over 33,000 proof gallons per day.
- - In-house live yeast propagation utilizing Heaven Hill's proprietary strain, ensuring a unique flavor profile in their bourbons.
- - Onsite wastewater pretreatment to create renewable energy, significantly alleviating the load on local infrastructure.
- - A new 22-gallon beer system aimed at reducing water consumption by more than 24,000 gallons daily.
- - Integrated energy-efficient systems, including LED lighting and substantial insulation on hot equipment to enhance sustainability.
Moreover, the facility emphasizes environmental consciousness through woodland restoration and stormwater management solutions that minimize runoff.
Conor O'Driscoll, Heaven Hill’s Master Distiller, highlighted the significance of this facility, stating that it is a tribute to the craftsmanship of those who came before him and a commitment to advancing whiskey production's future.
Celebrating Heritage and Legacy
The grand opening event brought together a diverse group of attendees, including lawmakers, media representatives, and employees. The Shapira family, who have overseen operations since the inaugural barrel was filled back in 1935, also attended. The event honored the legacy of Parker Beam, a pivotal figure in Heaven Hill's history, celebrated for his contribution over a remarkable 56-year tenure. His influence can be seen throughout the distillery's production methods and the high standards that Heaven Hill upholds today.
The first barrel at the Springs Distillery was filled by Charlie Downs, the Master Distiller Emeritus, who has a unique connection to all four distilleries operated by Heaven Hill through the years. To commemorate the opening, a limited edition bourbon, named Heaven Hill Master Distillers Unity, was released. This special bourbon beautifully combines spirits from different eras, highlighting Heaven Hill's rich heritage and craftsmanship.
Design and Visitor Experience
The architectural and interior design of the Springs Distillery was meticulously crafted by Joseph Joseph in collaboration with Buzick Construction, showcasing local artistry and craftsmanship. Key design features include a striking two-story bar, custom tanks reminiscent of the historic Glencoe facility, and benches made from reclaimed wood honoring the rich legacy of bourbon making in Bardstown.
To enhance visitor experience, Heaven Hill is launching the Heritage Rising Tour, providing small-group explorers with behind-the-scenes access to the distillery, guided tastings, and transportation from the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience. Tickets for the tour, priced at $55, are now available.
Commitment to Community
Heaven Hill Brands continues to demonstrate its commitment to Bardstown, pledging $500,000 to the Bardstown Aquatic and Sports Center, currently under construction. This commitment goes beyond financial investments, as the distillery incorporates features aimed at fostering education in forestry and promoting biodiversity with native landscaping.
As Co-President Allan Latts noted, Heaven Hill Brands is focused on building a sustainable future similar to how they have led for the past 90 years—by honoring their values, investing in their community, and supporting local heritage.
Founded in 1935, Heaven Hill is recognized today as one of the largest independent, family-owned spirits producers in the United States and remains a prominent player in the bourbon industry. With the opening of Springs Distillery, Heaven Hill Brands continues its commitment to excellence, craftsmanship, and innovation in American whiskey production.
