SPX FLOW Launches Innovative Combi MP Pilot Line
In a groundbreaking development for the food and nutrition sector, SPX FLOW has introduced its latest pilot line, the Combi Microparticulation (MP), designed to revolutionize the use of whey protein. With whey transitioning from a traditional by-product of cheese production to a sought-after ingredient in nutritional formulations, SPX FLOW is at the forefront of unlocking the full potential of this versatile protein.
The new pilot line, located at SPX FLOW’s Denmark Innovation Center in Silkeborg, will be available for customer trials starting in January 2026. This innovative setup allows producers to refine their recipes directly onsite or rent the unit for specific periods within their own facilities. Providing flexibility to meet producers' needs is at the core of this initiative, aiming to advance the quality and functionality of whey protein in various food and beverage products.
The Combi MP design is highly anticipated as it integrates two advanced microparticulation technologies from APV: LeanCreme™ and Cavimaster™. This dual-technology platform will enable customers to experiment with recipes using different methods, leading to enhanced efficiency in product trials. As Thomas Leroy, Global Head of Innovation Centers at SPX FLOW, noted, “This innovation gives our customers a competitive edge. By offering two microparticulation methods in one pilot, we help producers accelerate formulation development, reduce waste during testing, and tailor the particle size of whey proteins to fit diverse product applications.”
Whey protein has gained immense popularity due to its numerous health benefits and versatility, making it an integral ingredient in a wide variety of products, including ready-to-drink coffees, desserts, and fermented dairy items. Operating at a flow rate of just 150 liters per hour, the Combi MP allows producers to conduct tests using smaller product quantities while collecting valuable process data that can inform larger scale production strategies.
The demand for microparticulated whey is surging, spurred by leading dairy brands aiming to enhance their protein-based offerings. SPX FLOW’s innovative approach and commitment to application expertise in pilot-scale testing positions it as a trailblazer, effectively meeting the evolving needs of the market.
