Beginning on April 25, 2023, the mesmerizing projection mapping artwork titled 'Tokyo Rebirth - A Journey Through the Soul of the City, Abyss and Rebirth' will captivate audiences in Tokyo. This stunning visual spectacle has been created by the internationally acclaimed artist Mika Ninagawa in collaboration with the creative team EiM. It represents a crucial addition to the city's ongoing efforts to enhance its nighttime attractions.

Tokyo's vibrant urban tapestry serves as a larger-than-life canvas, where information and light constantly intertwine. The projection mapping will transform the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building into a realm of sound and color, bringing to life the intricate energies of transformation housed within this vast metropolis. This piece interprets the city as a living entity, capturing the essence of its enduring metamorphosis. Tokyo, a colossal urban hive, is depicted pulsating with the chaos and order of life and death. As one gazes into the depths of this artwork, bursts of color and light emerge from the hard structures of the city, eventually giving rise to blooming flowers that symbolize the 'force of life' overflowing beyond the city’s surface.

In the ethereal interaction between sound and light, the city reveals different facets of itself, quietly enveloping viewers in its vivid, breathing presence. Here, at the intersection of endings and beginnings, an awakening spirit surges throughout the urban landscape.

Screening Times:


The projections will be shown on weekends and holidays at:
7:30 PM and 9:00 PM. The schedule runs from April 25 to May 6. Details about showtimes after this date will be available on the special website.

This projection mapping, along with additional works, will also be showcased outside of these times, ensuring a range of experiences.

About the Creators



Mika Ninagawa is a celebrated photographer, filmmaker, and contemporary artist. Her work spans diverse mediums, including photography, film, video, and spatial installations. With numerous accolades like the Kimura Ihee Photo Award, she has directed five full-length films, including Helter Skelter (2012) and Netflix’s FOLLOWERS (2020). Mika has published over 120 photobooks and organized more than 150 solo exhibitions along with over 130 group shows, securing her status as a potent force in both Japanese and international art scenes.

The collaborative team, EiM, includes Mika Ninagawa, Artistic Director and Scientist Hiroaki Miyata, Video Director Yoko Nagoya, and Music Producer and Sound Director Manato Kenmochi. Together, they assemble diverse teams for each project, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of their creative approach.

Event Dates: Screenings are held daily unless affected by severe weather.
Display Surface: Eastern wall of Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, First Main Office.
Viewing Location: Citizens’ Square (2 Chome-8-1 Nishishinjuku, Shinjuku City, Tokyo)
Screening Times: 7:00 PM, 7:30 PM, 8:00 PM, 8:30 PM, 9:00 PM, and 9:30 PM.
Until May 6th, these times apply; the detailed schedule afterwards will be available on the special site.
