Support Initiative for Kumamoto's Third Sector Railways Launches 'Gamada-subai Digital Tetsuin'

Support Initiative for Third Sector Railways in Kumamoto

Kumamoto Prefecture, still recovering from the significant damage caused by the earthquake in 2026, has initiated a unique campaign to support its local third sector railways: Hichiku Orange Railway, Minamiaso Railway, and Kumagawa Railway. In partnership with Yomiuri Travel Co., along with its subsidiary Yomiuri Travel Publisher, the campaign was unveiled on August 28, 2026, and will run for two months. The initiative features the sales of 'Gamada-subai Digital Tetsuin' on the "Tetsuin Chou Digital" web application.

The phrase 'Gamada-subai' translates to 'Let's do our best' in Kumamoto dialect, embodying the resilience and determination of the three railway companies in the face of adversity following the earthquake. The concept of 'Digital Tetsuin' enhances the connection between fans and these local railways through digital collectibles designed as non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Overview of the Initiative

The campaign launched on August 28, 2026, will be available until October 31, 2026. During this time, consumers can purchase 'Gamada-subai Digital Tetsuin' in three different varieties, priced at 1,100 yen, 5,500 yen, and 11,000 yen, all including tax. Importantly, 70% of the sales proceeds, after deducting handling fees, will be distributed amongst the three railway companies affected by the earthquake.

This initiative is not just about financial support, but also about creating a digital community focused on the promotion and revival of local tourism. By collecting these digital tetsuin, participants can connect with the spirit of Kumamoto and safely contribute to the local economy underlining the importance of rail travel in the region.

How to Purchase

The 'Tetsuin Chou Digital' platform allows users to register for free and start collecting. Purchasers can scan QR codes displayed at various train stations with their smartphones, which will lead them to the digital purchasing options in the web app. Payment can be conveniently completed through secure methods such as credit cards. The use of NFT technology ensures that the digital collectibles are unique and resistant to duplication, granting collectors genuine items to support the revival of local railways.

Approximately 80 railway companies that belong to the Third Sector Railway Council are participating, highlighting the collective effort to bring awareness to these essential services. The campaign not only aids in the recovery post-earthquake but also promotes the heritage and significance of Kumamoto’s railway network.

Growing engagement from everyday travelers and railway enthusiasts through this project promises to foster a renewed interest in exploring the beautiful landscapes of Kumamoto while ensuring that local rail businesses can thrive once again.

Through such creative support initiatives as the 'Gamada-subai Digital Tetsuin', we are reminded of the importance of community resilience and the joy of travel, helping to restore and revitalize the essential services that connect us all.
