Saint-Jean-Baptiste Electric Cooperative Enhances Future Grid Operations with Landis+Gyr
In a significant move towards modernization and sustainability,
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Electric Cooperative has established a partnership with
Landis+Gyr, a global leader in integrated energy management solutions, to deploy the
Revelo® grid edge sensing platform. This collaboration aims to revolutionize the utility's operational capabilities while supporting the overall strategy for grid modernization.
The agreement was announced on January 7, 2025, during a pivotal time for energy distribution, which faces multiple challenges such as aging infrastructure, rising energy demand, and the necessity to meet
Quebec's net-zero carbon emissions goal by 2050. The Revelo platform is designed to enhance energy efficiency and facilitate better engagement with customers.
Damien Tholomier, General Manager of
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Electric Cooperative, emphasized the need for innovative solutions to tackle the pressing obstacles utility companies face. He stated, “Power distribution faces numerous challenges that threaten its reliability, efficiency, and resilience. We chose the Revelo AMI platform to administer our Grid Modernization plan, allowing for innovative products and solutions that address future demands.”
The Push for Grid Modernization
Adopting advanced technology is essential as
Saint-Jean-Baptiste aims to transition toward automated demand management systems and support renewable energy resources. With the Revelo platform's capabilities, the cooperative can manage energy distribution more effectively, contributing to smarter load balancing and the integration of electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Landis+Gyr's
Prasanna Venkatesan, Executive Vice President for the Americas, added, “Building an intuitive and robust grid requires real-time visibility and management at the edge of the grid. Revelo's high-resolution data streaming capabilities, coupled with powerful edge processing, support demand management and outage prevention, pivotal in today’s energy landscape.”
Enhancing Customer Engagement
The Revelo platform will not only improve operational efficiency but also empower customers with enhanced information regarding their energy usage. Tholomier shared, “We’re delighted to partner with Landis+Gyr, which will ultimately provide homeowners and businesses with more choices and accessible information about their energy consumption.”
As the cooperative serves approximately seven thousand customers across
sixteen municipalities in Quebec, the implementation of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) will aid in better decision-making regarding energy usage and management. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly towards energy conservation and customer satisfaction.
Broader Implications for Energy Distribution
The Revelo platform’s unique features will support a range of applications, including transportation electrification, distributed energy resources (DERs), and better management of circuit-level capacities. With the deployment of over five million Revelo sensing meters across North America, Landis+Gyr is positioned to enhance grid intelligence significantly.
Besides the Revelo implementation,
Saint-Jean-Baptiste plans to upgrade its distribution management systems to improve voltage conservation and outage management. This comprehensive approach is crucial not just for operational enhancement but also for meeting future energy demands and environmental responsibilities.
A Commitment to Clean Energy
The collaboration aligns with Saint-Jean-Baptiste’s mission to facilitate the energy transition while focusing on the needs of its members. It reflects a broader trend in the utility sector where modernization meets sustainability, promoting a reliable and affordable electricity supply while adhering to Canada’s environmental goals.
