Montefiore Health System Welcomes Ruth E. Cassidy as Chief Pharmacy Officer



Montefiore Health System, recognized for its dedication to high-quality healthcare, has appointed Ruth E. Cassidy, B.S., PharmD, MBA, FACHE, FASHP, as its inaugural Chief Pharmacy Officer. This new position marks a significant step towards improvement in medication management strategies aimed at enhancing patient care across the system.

Dr. Cassidy brings a wealth of experience in pharmacy practice spanning several decades, focusing on critical elements such as medication safety and regulatory compliance. With her extensive background, she will oversee pharmacy services across Montefiore's various acute and outpatient facilities, including the system’s advanced Specialty Pharmacy that provides medications via home delivery in the Bronx and Westchester.

Peter P. Semczuk, DDS, MPH, Regional Senior Vice President and Executive Director of the Moses Campus Faculty Practice Group at Montefiore, expressed his confidence in Dr. Cassidy, stating, "There is no better person than Dr. Cassidy to be our inaugural chief pharmacy officer and member of our leadership team dedicated to enhancing patient and caregiver care and support." Dr. Cassidy's role will be crucial as Montefiore continues to invest in innovative technologies and quality assurance strategies that streamline medication processes and optimize patient outcomes.

Addressing Complexity in Care


Chronic diseases affect a staggering number of New Yorkers, with over 40% of adults suffering from at least one chronic condition. As medication management becomes increasingly essential, Dr. Cassidy will be responsible for leading pharmacy operations that tackle challenges ranging from the latest cancer treatment breakthroughs to effective communication strategies that support care coordination.

Dr. Cassidy stated, "I've been privileged to spend most of my career serving Bronx patients and families. By joining Montefiore and leading pharmacy operations, I will have the opportunity to leverage existing relationships with community partners and establish new collaborations across the system, ensuring consistent experiences that benefit every provider and patient. I'm excited to get started."

Before joining Montefiore, Dr. Cassidy served as Senior Vice President of Clinical Support Services and Chief Pharmacy Officer at SBH Health System, where she was instrumental in launching the system's first outpatient and specialty pharmacies, as well as an accredited pharmacy resident program.

With a Master of Business Administration from West Texas A&M University and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida, Dr. Cassidy is well-equipped to lead Montefiore's pharmacy operations into a new era. Her educational background also includes a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from St. John's University.
