The pilot program involved the deployment of Neolix vehicles that were tasked with transporting customer orders from a centralized warehouse directly to the store. Customers were able to pick up their orders themselves, drastically improving their experience. The Neolix vehicles not only facilitated order transportation but also supported in-store replenishment activities, emphasizing their multi-functional capabilities.

Since the pilot's inception, these autonomous vehicles have collectively driven nearly 75,600 kilometers, showcasing their reliability and efficiency in operational environments. Ingka Group, the largest franchise holder of IKEA, confirmed that adopting these vehicles at their Hefei location marks a step towards revolutionizing logistics within larger retail operations.

Customer Benefits and Business Impact



One of the most striking outcomes from the pilot was the reduction in waiting times for self-pickup orders, which dropped from six hours to just two hours. This remarkable decrease significantly enhances customer satisfaction, as they are now able to retrieve their orders much more quickly and efficiently. On the business side, transportation costs between different IKEA operational units were reduced by over 50%, providing a cost-effective model that smaller stores could adopt in the future.

The Technology Behind Neolix Vehicles



The vehicles deployed in this project are the Neolix X6 models, designed with a cargo capacity of 6 cubic meters and a payload capacity exceeding one ton. They operate under Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, enabling them to independently manage all driving tasks within defined environments without requiring human intervention. This level of autonomy ensures that while the vehicles are actively transporting goods, they are also continuously monitored remotely to ensure safety and operational integrity.

Neolix's vehicles showcase adaptability, performing reliably even in adverse conditions such as rain, fog, snow, and on unpaved roads. Furthermore, they can navigate complex environments, including areas with high pedestrian and vehicle traffic, underscoring their suitability for urban logistics applications.

Future Prospects for Autonomous Logistics



With data from the pilot program, IKEA is now assessing potential markets that could benefit from autonomous logistics solutions particularly where local regulations and infrastructure support their implementation. In China, IKEA is also investigating opportunities for direct autonomous deliveries to customers, hinting at a future where autonomous vehicles could become a central component of retail logistics.
