Lisa Hurley's New Book Offers Black Women a Path to Healing and Rest

Embracing Rest: Lisa Hurley’s "Space To Exhale"

On June 17, 2025, coinciding with the celebration of Juneteenth and Caribbean-American Heritage Month, Lisa Hurley will launch her debut book titled Space To Exhale: A Handbook for Curating a Soft, Centered, Serene Life. Known as a three-time Anthem Award-winning activist, writer, and Reiki master, Hurley unveils a heartfelt invitation for Black women to reclaim their joy, breath, and time amid overwhelming societal pressures.

In Space To Exhale, Hurley presents rest not merely as a luxury but as a fundamental act of resistance and self-reclamation. Drawing on personal anecdotes and reflections, the book delves into the critical importance of rest for mental well-being, especially for Black women who have faced unique challenges, particularly in recent job market fluctuations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Black women have been disproportionately affected by job losses, making the book's message even more relevant today.

Mary-Frances Winters, the author of Black Fatigue, emphasizes the book's significance: "Those of us who are a part of the global majority—and particularly Black women—are under intensified attacks, leaving many of us feeling unsafe and exhausted. Hurley invites us to pause, breathe, and curate a life of intentional rest, connection, and alignment. Space To Exhale is truly a gift."

What Readers Can Expect

Hurley’s insightful approach encourages readers to rethink their relationship with productivity and self-care. Space To Exhale offers:
  • - An exploration of rest as a radical act for Black women in today’s society.
  • - Personal stories and reflections that resonate deeply with the reader's experiences.
  • - Practical tips and soft-life strategies designed to foster life-work balance.
  • - Affirmations, meditations, and breathing exercises aimed at enhancing one’s mental mindset.
  • - Guidance to overcome burnout, embrace ease, and transition from overdrive to a more centered existence.

As Hurley succinctly puts it, “In a world that often demands our constant labor and resilience, Space To Exhale is an invitation to pause, breathe, and honor our need to simply be.” Through her book, she reaches out to every Black woman who has felt the strain of holding their breath in various aspects of life—emotionally, spiritually, and physically—reminding them that it’s time to rest and to exhale.

The launch of Space To Exhale signifies more than just a book release; it is a movement aimed at promoting dialogue around rest, mental health, and self-care, especially during the momentous occasion of Juneteenth. To enhance this initiative, Hurley plans a series of in-person and virtual events during the book launch period. She is also available for interviews and speaking engagements to further discuss her work and its impact.

The book will be published by Wiley, and pre-orders are already open, accessible through major book retailers and online platforms. For more details on Lisa Hurley, her new book, and related events, visit spacetoexhalebook.com.
