Postpartum Support International (PSI) Revamps PMH-C Certification
In a commitment to improving care accessibility for individuals dealing with perinatal mental health challenges, Nonprofit Postpartum Support International (PSI) has made important updates to its Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) program. This modification focuses on ensuring that professionals are well-equipped to support parents confronting a variety of perinatal mental health disorders such as postpartum depression and anxiety, which span the crucial period from conception to one year post-birth.
The PMH-C certification establishes a professional structure aimed at both education and evaluation for providers, including mental health experts, obstetricians, nurses, doulas, and lactation consultants. The curriculum is built upon evidence-based training and includes an advanced-training component. As part of the certification process, candidates undergo a computer-based examination to evaluate their proficiency in this specialized field.
Since its inception in 2018, over 6,000 providers have obtained PMH-C certification, highlighting the growth of recognition for this important specialty. Birdie Gunyon Meyer, the Education and Training Director at PSI, emphasizes the value of continuously updating the curriculum to reflect the latest best practices and the evolving needs of both patients and professionals involved in mental health care.
To ensure the certification remains relevant, PSI conducted a comprehensive Job Task Analysis between May 2023 and September 2024. This analysis involved gathering input from over 1,100 certified providers to validate and update the PMH-C examination specifications. This crucial exercise also enabled PSI to establish a benchmark score that accurately reflects the knowledge and competencies required to practice as a PMH-C professional.
Dr. Wendy Davis, President and CEO of PSI, noted that experiencing perinatal mood or anxiety disorders often leads to feelings of fear and shame. With the updates to the PMH-C program, affected parents can more easily connect with qualified professionals who understand their situation and can guide them through recovery.
Moreover, PSI maintains an extensive online Perinatal Mental Health Provider Directory that allows individuals to locate certified providers in their area, complete with information on their services and insurance coverage. In addition, PSI provides a Perinatal Psychiatric Consultation line that offers complimentary consultations between medical providers and expert perinatal psychiatrists.
PSI also coordinates numerous virtual support groups tailored for diverse communities, including military families, fathers, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and Spanish-speaking populations. This focus on community support underscores PSI’s mission to offer accessible help for those experiencing perinatal mental health challenges.
For individuals or families who think they might be struggling with a perinatal mental health disorder, accessing support is vital, even without a formal diagnosis. PSI encourages parents and their allies to contact their helpline for assistance. The support hotline can be reached at 1-800-944-4773 (available in English and Spanish) or via text message.
