Globeleq Appoints Jonathan Hoffman as Full-Time CEO After Interim Leadership

Globeleq's Bold Leadership Move: Jonathan Hoffman as Permanent CEO

On March 31, 2025, Globeleq, Africa's leading independent power producer, made a significant announcement regarding its leadership. The company’s Board of Directors confirmed Jonathan Hoffman as the permanent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) after his tenure as interim CEO. This decision comes after a comprehensive search process that evaluated both internal and external candidates.

Jonathan Hoffman joined Globeleq in 2010 and has been a pivotal figure in the company’s development trajectory. He was appointed Director of Development in 2020 and took on the interim CEO role in July 2024. Under his guidance, the company has made substantial strides in securing new investments and development projects across Africa. Notably, one of the recent highlights during his tenure includes the awarding of Red Sands, the continent's largest independent battery storage project.

During the past years, Globeleq has nearly doubled its generation capacity, both operational and under construction, significantly contributing to the energy sector in Africa. From 2015 onwards, the Company was responsible for a remarkable 43% of all non-hydro renewable energy generation and gas among independent power producers (IPPs) at the utility scale within sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa.

As the newly confirmed CEO, Jonathan Hoffman is tasked with leading Globeleq through a new phase of growth, focusing on energy transition initiatives in Southern Africa and Kenya. Presently, Globeleq owns and operates a total of 12 renewable energy plants located in South Africa, Mozambique, and Kenya, with an additional 485 MW currently under construction and various flagship projects in development throughout the region.

Hoffman’s leadership will also ensure that Globeleq continues to prioritize its existing plants throughout Southern Africa, which play a crucial role in supplying power to local communities and industries while simultaneously generating returns for shareholders. Laurence Mulliez, the Chairperson of Globeleq, expressed confidence in Jonathan's capabilities, stating, “I am extremely pleased to confirm that Jonathan Hoffman is now the permanent CEO of Globeleq. He possesses deep knowledge of our people and customer portfolio and is ideally positioned to lead Globeleq during this growth period.”

Echoing Mulliez’s sentiments, Jonathan Hoffman remarked, “I am delighted to lead the talented Globeleq team in fulfilling our mission and driving the energy transition in Southern Africa. My absolute commitment is to address our customers’ challenges and create value for our shareholders.”
