Pioneering Autonomous Transport for Printing Paper
Oji Logistics Corporation, based in Chuo City, Tokyo, and T2 Corporation, located in Chiyoda City, Tokyo, are embarking on an innovative collaboration that will see autonomous trucks take on the transportation of printing paper. This pilot program is set to commence in October 2025, focusing on the routes between the Kanto and Kansai regions, specifically on a section of the expressway.
In recent times, Oji Logistics has highlighted the ever-present challenge of driver shortages, especially in light of the impending "2024 Problem." This term refers to the anticipated scarcity of truck drivers which could significantly reduce transport capacity. To tackle this issue, Oji Logistics is positioning self-driving trucks as a viable new mode of transport. Their collaboration with T2 will explore the feasibility of this advanced transportation system.
In its pursuit of excellence in supply chain management, T2 has initiated commercial operations of Level 2 autonomous trucks since July 2025. The ultimate goal is to establish a Level 4 autonomous freight transportation service by 2027. This pilot project will employ Level 2 autonomous driving technology to transport large rolls of printing paper, which can weigh over a ton each, thus emphasizing the importance of safety and operational reliability during the trial.
Overview of the Pilot Project
- - Start Date: October 23, 2025
- - Duration: Scheduled to be carried out four times
- - Route: From Oji Logistics' Ariake warehouse in Tokyo to the Anjigawa warehouse in Osaka, using specific segments of the expressway.
- - Roles: Oji Logistics will provide the cargo, while T2 will oversee overall management and provide experimental vehicles.
Goals and Evaluations
During the trials, which will involve a human driver supervising the autonomous system, the focus will be on validating the following:
- - The efficiency of the autonomous driving route for freight transportation
- - Verification of operational patterns and their effectiveness
Both companies intend to use the results from this pilot to consider future collaboration in providing Level 4 autonomous trucking services for freight transport.
