Exploring the Current State of Decommissioning at Fukushima Daiichi

On March 24, 2026, the Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will host a vital seminar featuring Okih Watanabe, the head of the Decommissioning Safety and Quality Division at Tokyo Electric Power Holdings (TEPCO). This seminar will focus on the current state of decommissioning at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and the complexities involved in retrieving fuel debris.

Background

Since the catastrophic accident at Fukushima Daiichi in 2011, over fourteen years have passed. The decommissioning process has gradually evolved from immediate, urgent responses to more systematic, forward-looking operations. However, many unprecedented tasks remain, and TEPCO is slowly advancing while accumulating new knowledge and experience.

Seminar Overview

Watanabe will delve into the ongoing progress of the decommissioning efforts and the various challenges that have been encountered. This will include:
1. An overview of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
2. The procedures for retrieving spent fuel from the fuel pool.
3. The planning and challenges related to fuel debris retrieval:
- (1) The experimental retrieval at Reactor 2.
- (2) Preparations for large-scale retrieval from Reactor 3.
4. Contaminated water management strategies.
5. The status of ALPS treated water release.
6. Waste management approaches.
7. A Q&A session for participants.
8. Opportunities for networking and exchanging business cards.

This seminar represents a rare opportunity for attendees to engage directly with an expert in the field, allowing for insightful discussions and valuable knowledge sharing across various industries.

Participation Options
