Hithium Unveils Groundbreaking Sodium-ion Battery Revolutionizing Utility-Scale Energy Storage Technology
Hithium Launches the Infinity Cell N162Ah
Hithium has made a significant stride in energy storage technology by introducing the ∞Cell N162Ah, the first sodium-ion battery tailored for utility-scale energy applications. Revealed during the second Hithium Eco-Day held in Beijing on December 12, 2024, this battery is designed to operate efficiently across diverse temperature ranges and high-rate discharge scenarios. With a focus on both energy efficiency and safety, Hithium aims to redefine the capabilities of energy storage systems.
Specifications and Advantages
The standout features of the ∞Cell N162Ah include remarkable cycle life, exceptional charge/discharge capabilities, and high round-trip energy efficiency. At standard conditions of 25°C, the battery promises a capacity retention of 94.2% after 4,000 cycles, and its lifespan is projected to extend beyond 20,000 cycles at a minimum state of health (SOH) of 70%. The performance enhances even at elevated temperatures; for instance, at 45°C, it retains 92.5% capacity retention after the same number of cycles, effectively increasing its cycle life by more than five times.
Unique Battery Technology
Hithium's new battery utilizes polyanion technology involving a sodium iron ortho-pyrophosphate cathode paired with a hard carbon anode. This innovative setup brings forth several advantages, including improved round-trip energy efficiency, low-temperature performance, and enhanced charge/discharge rates. Such features are vital for utility-scale energy storage requirements where safety, stability, and longevity are paramount.
Robust Safety Standards
Demonstrating a commitment to safety, the ∞Cell N162Ah has passed rigorous tests adhering to GB/T 44265 standards for utility-scale energy storage systems. These tests assess various safety aspects, including drop resistance, crush comfort, short-circuit scenarios, overcharge/over discharge situations, and thermal runaway. Additionally, it has undergone the nail penetration test, proving its safety during typical assembly and transportation conditions.
Storage and Performance
One notable feature of this sodium-ion battery is its ultra-long 0V shelf life. Even after six months in storage at zero volts, the battery exhibits zero capacity loss, maintaining performance akin to a newly manufactured unit. This excellent performance gives clients confidence in reliability during deployment.
In scenarios where the anode and cathode might short-circuit during assembly, the battery design mitigates any risk of sparking or electric shock. Furthermore, in risks associated with transport, such as crush incidents or device overturns, the battery design assures safety without combustion or explosion risks.
Future Outlook
Hithium's determination to lead the energy storage technology sector is evident. By pushing boundaries through innovative technologies, Hithium is poised to unlock the vast potential of sodium-ion batteries, significantly impacting the energy storage landscape. With GWh mass production planned for the fourth quarter of 2025, global sampling is already underway, placing Hithium at the forefront of advancements in sustainable energy solutions.
As the world continues its path toward sustainable energy practices, innovations like the ∞Cell N162Ah may soon become integral to the energy infrastructure necessary for a greener future.
