Lightergy and LGQ Join Forces with Canon Marketing Japan for Energy Innovation
Lightergy and LGQ's Partnership with Canon Marketing Japan
In a groundbreaking move set to reshape Japan's energy landscape, Lightergy, a North American leader in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and its subsidiary, Lightening Grid Québec (LGQ), have announced their partnership with Canon Marketing Japan (CMJ). On December 10, 2024, this collaboration was formalized at a signing event held at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo.
The primary focus of this partnership involves establishing an innovative energy infrastructure in Japan, characterized by advanced energy storage solutions and a virtual power plant (VPP) system that is poised to improve the country’s energy resilience and sustainability. According to data from the Federation of Electrical Power Companies of Japan (FEPC), Japan's energy security is heavily reliant on imports, accounting for 94% of its primary energy supply. This dependency makes the nation's energy grid susceptible to disruptions and supply shocks.
As per the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), CMJ aims to procure substantial volumes of energy storage systems, both residential and utility-scale, from LGQ. This procurement is set to support the development of what is anticipated to become Japan's most sophisticated VPP network by 2026, following a thorough evaluation and preparation phase. The introduction of this VPP system is expected to stabilize energy demand and supply dynamically while reducing Japan’s reliance on external energy imports and providing reliable emergency backup power.
Lightergy and LGQ have established a commendable reputation in North America, engineering battery solutions that outperform traditional assets in terms of performance, life cycle longevity, and cost-effectiveness. Their collaboration with CMJ will leverage the latter’s extensive marketing capabilities and robust value chain, spanning both business and consumer markets, thereby facilitating the deployment of Lightergy/LGQ's energy storage systems across various sectors in Japan, including residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
Michael Epstein, Lightergy's President and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "We are excited about this memorandum and the coming work we will be doing with Canon Marketing Japan. The intent to partner with us from a globally renowned company like CMJ is a strong endorsement of our innovative advancements in battery storage technology since 2007, which spans both defense applications and commercial uses."
Additionally, this agreement is geared towards generating a collaborative framework supported by the Canadian government, streamlining the import process for products destined for Japan. LGQ also intends to enhance its production capabilities at its facility in Shawnigan, Québec, utilizing the region's abundant raw materials known for supporting clean energy initiatives.
Guy Laliberte, Chief Operating Officer of LGQ, noted, "We aim to manifest cutting-edge applications tailored for the Japanese market in 2025, with a full-scale launch planned for 2026. This strategic initiative aligns with CMJ’s sustainability goals, as the advanced VPP system powered by Lightergy and LGQ's technology could indeed rank among the top in the global landscape.”
Lightergy began its journey in 2002 and has since evolved, notably collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense from 2007 onward, innovating rapid charging and discharging technologies while focusing on LFP-based BESS technologies. Today, Lightergy emphasizes a portfolio prioritizing safety, security, and performance across demanding environments.
