Okayama University Students Showcase Innovations at Tech Garage Achievement Presentation

On February 13, 2026, Okayama University hosted the Tech Garage Achievement Presentation at its Tsushima campus, in the KIBINOVE co-creation innovation lab. This event highlighted the outcomes of the second cohort of the Okayama Tech Garage Project, which aims to foster regional issue-solving and new business creation among students.

Organized as part of the Cabinet Office's initiative to enhance the innovation ecosystem at core regional universities, the event attracted around 30 participants, including university affiliates and industry representatives. The Okayama Tech Garage serves as a creative hub for students, equipped with advanced tools like 3D printers and high-performance PCs, allowing them to transform their ideas into reality—a true sanctuary for aspiring innovators.

The second cohort consisted of five student teams selected from eight applications for the 2025 project cycle. Over six months, the university provided financial support and mentorship, enabling these teams to explore, prototype, and validate their project ideas. At the report presentation, each team showcased their efforts, focusing on themes including:
  • - Mitigating odors in livestock farming,
  • - Enhancing community safety in the “Sunny Country,”
  • - The AI-powered tool 'KakerAI' that generates lesson plans based on research papers,
  • - Scientific validation of pasture-raised pork connecting consumers and producers,
  • - Concept development for collaborative work by modular mobile robots.

The presentations were dynamic, utilizing videos and prototypes to engage the audience. Students explained their project's background, technical innovations, challenges faced, and future directions with clarity and enthusiasm. They also adeptly responded to candid feedback and inquiries from reviewers, fostering an active discussion environment throughout the event.

Following the presentations, a networking session was held, allowing representatives from businesses, educational institutions, and the students themselves to exchange ideas. This provided students with a unique opportunity to receive direct feedback on their innovations, strengthening their understanding of community challenges and refining their project goals.

One student shared their insights, stating, "Interacting directly with local residents and municipal officials helped clarify community issues and challenges. It was enlightening to recognize the gaps between our project direction and our initial assumptions. Although we encountered numerous obstacles, it has been a tremendously valuable experience."

The initiative is part of Okayama University’s broader strategy to support startups and venture creation through comprehensive measures, including business idea commercialization, external mentorship, and assistance with fundraising and management. As a distinctive research university, Okayama University remains committed to fostering innovation and collaboration, contributing to both local and global advancements.

The presentation was not only a platform for students to display their projects but also a celebration of their growth and potential as innovators. The university looks forward to continuing its mission to develop a vibrant ecosystem that encourages creativity and problem-solving in the community.
