Celebrating Kabuki's Legacy with Traditional Rickshaw Rides in Tokyo

Celebrating Kabuki with Traditional Rickshaw Rides

From May 2 to June 27, 2025, Tokyo’s Kabukiza Theatre hosts a remarkable celebration of Kabuki history featuring special rickshaw rides. These rickshaws, beautifully wrapped to reflect the artistry of the Kabuki tradition, are operated by Tokyo Rickshaw, a company managed by Rise Up Corp., in collaboration with local management organizations.

This initiative honors the succession performances of notable Kabuki figures, the eighth generation of Onoe Kikugoro and the sixth generation of Onoe Kikunosuke. Visitors can enjoy rickshaw rides that offer not just transportation, but a unique cultural experience through the vibrant neighborhoods of Higashi-Ginza and Tsukiji.

The event known as "Dangiku Matsuri May Grand Kabuki" drew crowds from May 2 to May 27, with many patrons praising the rickshaw service as a way to enhance their Kabuki experience. One guest stated, "Traveling through the streets of Higashi-Ginza and Tsukiji while enjoying those Kabuki reminiscences made for an unforgettable day." Another patron remarked on the novelty of riding a rickshaw in Tsukiji, saying, "I’ve been on rickshaws in Asakusa and Kamakura before, but riding in Tsukiji was truly moving."
