Kōjū: A Historic Kyoto Fragrance Store Opens in Shibuya

Kōjū: A Testament to Kyoto's Fragrance Heritage

On March 28, 2026, Kōjū, a renowned fragrance store that dates back to 1575, will open its first location in Shibuya at the ShinQs shopping complex. This new shop aims to engage the younger generation and international visitors, offering a unique opportunity to experience Japan's rich fragrance culture right in the heart of one of Tokyo's most vibrant districts.

A Rich Historical Background

The origin of Kōjū is intertwined with the imperial court and notable figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. The store was founded by Yasuda Mataemon Mitsukihiro, a descendant of the Seiwa Genji clan. In the early days of the Tenshō era, the shop served the imperial family, establishing its reputation for quality. The second and fourth generations, Masakiyo and Masanaga respectively, were called upon by the prominent feudal lords of the time, further solidifying Kōjū's legacy in the world of fragrances.

Tokyo's New Fragrance Hub

The Shibuya store marks Kōjū's first foray into the bustling area and is designed to provide a welcoming environment for both locals and tourists. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the fragrance traditions of Japan while exploring a variety of products. Signature collections will include the “Takaichi Jūemon” incense series, inspired by the fragrance recipes of the eighth-generation Kōjū practitioner, as well as the “Iroha” series, which draws on motifs of seasonal flowers and fragrant woods.

In addition, customers can find essential daily items such as incense holders, incense burners, and fragrant pouches, alongside more luxurious options like high-grade incense and traditional Japanese incense tools used in tea ceremonies.

Exclusive Shibuya Products

A special highlight of the Shibuya shop will be an original card-shaped fragrance inspired by Hachiko, the beloved symbol of loyalty in Shibuya. This “Meishiko” featuring the aroma of magnolia allows customers to carry a touch of fragrance with them wherever they go, making it an ideal gift item.

Grand Opening Celebration

To commemorate the grand opening, Kōjū will be running a special promotion. Customers spending over ¥1,100 will receive a complimentary incense set, including three different incense types and a holder. This promotion emphasizes Kōjū’s commitment to enriching the lives of its customers through the art of fragrance while introducing a new generation to the beauty of Japanese incense culture.
