Chemours Introduces Opteon™ ZE and 515B Refrigerants for Enhanced Cooling Solutions

The Chemours Company, a global leader in chemistry, has unveiled its latest advancements in refrigerant technology with the launch of Opteon™ ZE (R-1234ze(E)) and Opteon™ 515B (R-515B). These innovative products are designed specifically to support stationary chiller systems in a variety of demanding applications, such as AI-driven data centers and commercial buildings where efficient and reliable cooling is critical.

In a press release dated August 10, 2026, Joseph Martinko, President of Thermal Specialized Solutions at Chemours, articulated the growing pressures placed on cooling systems due to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. He emphasized the necessity for refrigerants that not only provide efficiency and reliability but also maintain compliance with future regulations. The introduction of Opteon™ ZE and Opteon™ 515B further enhances the choices available for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and operators who are tasked with managing the cooling of mission-critical infrastructures.

As the demand for data centers grows, operators are increasingly challenged by rising cooling demands and the need for solutions that can scale efficiently. The newly launched Opteon™ refrigerants have been engineered specifically to handle these challenges. Opteon™ ZE stands out with its ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) of approximately 1, which denotes a significant reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional refrigerants. This product also has no ozone depletion potential (ODP) and is classified as A2L by ASHRAE, indicating it possesses mildly flammable properties. Its versatility makes it suitable for various cooling applications including air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, HVAC systems, and heat pumps.

On the other hand, Opteon™ 515B offers a balanced formula that combines approximately 91.1% R-1234ze(E) and 8.9% R-227ea. Boasting a GWP of around 293, it classifies as A1 by ASHRAE, meaning it does not propagate flames. This reliability is crucial for conventional chiller applications transitioning from higher-GWP refrigerants, providing an efficient cooling solution without compromising on performance.

The successful launch of these refrigerants aligns with Chemours' commitment to providing sustainable solutions for various industries. By focusing on higher-value applications, especially in data center infrastructure, Chemours aims to address long-term demand while fostering investment in sustainable cooling technologies. The company assures customers that its extensive experience and intellectual property portfolio support their ability to produce and distribute these low-GWP refrigerants without infringing on existing rights.

Moreover, the Opteon™ ZE and Opteon™ 515B refrigerants are now available in selected strategic markets, with plans for further expansion anticipated in response to market needs. This strategic initiative not only fortifies Chemours' standing as a premier supplier of refrigerants but also complements their existing offerings within the HVACR ecosystem, including air conditioning systems, refrigeration, and heat pumps.

In summary, the launch of Opteon™ ZE and Opteon™ 515B represents a significant step forward in the refrigeration sector, catering to the advanced cooling demands of the future. Chemours' forward-looking approach highlights the importance of sustainability in industrial applications, which is essential in addressing global climate challenges and ensuring the reliability of technology infrastructure across various sectors.
