Jefferson's Board of Trustees Welcomes New Leaders

Jefferson, which encompasses Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Health, and Jefferson Health Plans, has recently announced significant appointments to its Board of Trustees. Joining the Board are Dr. Anthony P. Monaco, an esteemed geneticist, and Elizabeth (Beth) Bierbower, a veteran healthcare executive. Together, they bring a wealth of expertise that will contribute to Jefferson's mission of improving lives through excellence in various health domains.

Dr. Anthony Monaco: A Pioneer in Genetics

Dr. Anthony Monaco is highly regarded for his pivotal work in genetics, particularly his discovery of the gene linked to X-linked Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies. This achievement marked a revolutionary advancement in human genetics, paving the way for innovative therapeutic strategies. Monaco has spent over 20 years at the University of Oxford, where he held the position of Professor of Human Genetics and directed the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. His leadership there was instrumental in increasing global research impact in the field of neurogenetics.

In 2011, Monaco transitioned to Tufts University as its 13th President, where he served for 12 years. His leadership included transformative initiatives such as integrating the School of the Museum of Fine Arts into the university's framework and launching enhanced diversity and mental health support programs. Presently, he holds the title of President Emeritus and University Professor, contributing to ongoing research and engagement with various academic and philanthropic organizations.

Elizabeth Bierbower: Champion of Transformative Care

Accompanying Monaco is Elizabeth Bierbower, a healthcare executive whose career spans over three decades across various sectors, including Medicare Advantage and TRICARE. Known for her ability to innovate and stimulate growth, Bierbower has distinguished herself with a focus on value-based care models. Most notably, during her time at Humana, she oversaw the creation of a new division aimed at enhancing the Medicare Advantage experience for customers.

Previously, she held the position of President of Humana’s Group and Specialty Segment, managing a substantial $7 billion business serving millions of members. Her expertise in operational excellence and innovation has consistently achieved profitable outcomes while developing the skills and talents of her teams.

A Warm Welcome from the Board

Michael E. Sneed, Chair of the Jefferson Board of Trustees, expressed enthusiasm about the new appointments, stating, "Tony's contributions to genetic research, coupled with his strategic leadership experience, align perfectly with our dedication to discovery and student success. Recognizing Departing Board Members

Jefferson also took the opportunity to commend two retiring Board members for their extraordinary service. Patricia D. Wellenbach, who was pivotal during her tenure from May 2015 until June 2026 and served as the first female Chair of the Board, has been instrumental in guiding Jefferson through significant evolution and expansion. Her advocacy for health innovation, education, and community impact was vital to the organization’s progress.

Additionally, Dr. John J. Fung, whose service spanned from July 2023 to June 2026, brought his clinical acumen and academic insight to the Board. His contributions significantly enhanced discussions surrounding patient care priorities.
