The Linux Foundation Celebrates LF India's Growth and Innovation

Event Recap: Open Source Summit India 2025

On August 4, 2025, LF India proudly celebrated its inaugural year by hosting the Open Source Summit India, marking a significant milestone for the organization and the growing open source community in India. Since its launch last year at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India, LF India has rapidly evolved, establishing a vibrant ecosystem of engaged communities and innovative projects driven by artificial intelligence (AI).

A major highlight of the summit was the announcement of new partnerships with several influential foundations, including AgStack, LF AI & Data, FinOps Foundation, FINOS, O3DE, and OpenInfra Foundation. These collaborations have expanded LF India’s reach, enabling the support of over a dozen active sub-foundations that focus on various critical domains, such as cloud computing, security, blockchain, AI, and manufacturing. This initiative reflects the collective vision of creating open, accessible, and interoperable systems under India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) mission.

Driving Innovation Across Industries
LF India has emerged as a crucial player in fostering development across multiple sectors, including telecommunications, finance, energy, and cybersecurity. Notably, the organization has engaged in accelerating shared development by integrating essential foundations such as CNCF, LF Decentralized Trust, LF Edge, LF Networking, and OpenSSF. This year, LF India aims to deepen its impact in various economic drivers, particularly focusing on AI, agriculture, and manufacturing, sectors that are expected to witness transformative growth.

"India is uniquely positioned as a global leader in open source innovation, supported by substantial governmental investments and a wealth of developer talent," stated Arpit Joshipura, Head of LF India. "Our commitment at LF India is centered around fostering strategic membership growth, encouraging upstream contributions, and energizing community engagement."

Achievements Since Launch
Since its establishment in December 2024, LF India has witnessed notable accomplishments:

  • - Welcomed six new sub-foundations in 2025, enhancing its capacity for diverse technological advancements.
  • - Promoted interactive developer events, including webinars and meetups, that led to increased participation and knowledge sharing.
  • - Enabled significant contributions from India in the open-source domain, especially in areas such as decentralized identity management and secure finance solutions.
  • - Contributed to the increasing adoption of Kubernetes and cloud technologies, evidenced by an impressive number of meetups and active chapters across the country.
  • - Drove innovation in telecommunications by launching the IOS-MCN project alongside Infosys’s pioneering AI initiatives, such as Essedum and Salus.
  • - Published the LF Decentralized Trust – India 2025 ebook, highlighting local advancements and leadership within decentralized technologies.
  • - Expanded educational access through targeted training programs to upskill the burgeoning developer community in India.

Towards Greater Contribution
As India now hosts over 17 million open source developers, a notable increase of 28%—the fastest rate globally—LF India is calling for more strategic participation at the global level. Despite the exponential growth in open source consumption in India, contribution rates remain disproportionately low compared to other regions. By investing in targeted training and localized events, LF India aims to bridge this gap and position India firmly as a leader in open source contributions.

"Our focus extends beyond just consumption. We are committed to empowering India's developers to take the lead in open source innovation by fostering collaboration and building infrastructure for future growth," added Joshipura.

Looking Ahead
In the coming year, LF India plans to strengthen its presence in vertical industries and critical areas of infrastructure. With ambitions to amplify India's role as a global contributor to open source projects, LF India remains focused on driving forward initiatives that resonate with the needs of local communities while aligning with global trends in technology.
