Creating Youth Connections: A New Dating Model by Omikare and Konan University

Introducing the New Dating Model

In a groundbreaking initiative that merges academia and the real world, Omikare, a leading matchmaking platform, has teamed up with Konan University’s Management and Design Faculty (CUBE) to tackle pressing social issues surrounding dating among the youth. This collaboration, which commenced in April 2026, aims to respond to the significant challenges posed by declining birth rates and increasing numbers of unmarried individuals in Japan.

Background of the Project

The project’s genesis stems from the pressing need to address the noticeable decline in dating opportunities and the evolving relationships perceptions among Japan’s youth. Understanding these shifts, the project encourages Generation Z college students to engage in entrepreneurial thinking and propose innovative business models for dating. The goal is not only to devise practical business plans but also to cultivate a mindset where young people naturally incorporate relationships and marriage into their life plans.

During the inaugural class in April, Omikare's president, Masahito Kurumiya, provided insights into his company's business model and the value of connections created through matchmaking events. Following this, students analyzed market trends and local revitalization strategies to develop new dating models that meet current societal needs.

Final Presentation Highlights

On July 22, 2026, the culmination of this three-month project was showcased during a final business plan presentation led by Professor Aoki at Konan University. Student teams presented diverse business plans aimed at attracting new customers among the youth, utilizing data analytics and target interviews.

The presentations revealed a remarkable blend of creativity emblematic of Generation Z, going beyond simple event planning to include detailed strategies that engaged with stakeholders and comprehensive marketing strategies.

Examples of Innovative Ideas

1. Rhythmatch - Aimed at young people with non-traditional work schedules, this project offers relaxed meetings in a planetarium setting on Mondays, turning an unconventional approach to dating into a soothing experience.
2. Love Connects through Shared Interests - This project focuses on the burgeoning ¥4.1 trillion fandom market, facilitating conversation and connections through shared fandom activities such as creating fan banners before concerts, addressing the need for lower barriers to participation while fostering natural interactions.
3. Additional proposals included a 'Learning Activity Dating' approach through Korean language schools and an initiative for students who navigated the challenges of COVID-19 to reconnect with their youthful spirit, as well as a 'Love at First AI' matchmaking function proposed for the online platform. Through these innovative concepts, the course encouraged non-traditional and versatile approaches to dating.

Reflections on the Project

Professor Aoki shared insights on the necessity of considering various stakeholders, including event organizers and communities, in understanding successful matchmaking. He noted that students faced numerous challenges while developing their proposals and that feedback from Kurumiya offered them invaluable insights into real-world business challenges, helping to reshape their understanding of sustainable relationships. Many students expressed personal growth, noting a significant shift in their perspectives on dating and relationship sustainability throughout the project.

Future Perspectives

Throughout fifteen dynamic sessions, the project yielded numerous innovative ideas that captured the unique sensibilities of Generation Z. The proposals not only transcended traditional event planning but also explored sustainable models that incorporated community partnerships. This experience encouraged students to confront their own views on dating and future life plans openly, creating a meaningful connection to the project’s themes. Omikare remains committed to expanding avenues for authentic interactions for the youth, aligning with their evolving values and offering new frameworks for relationship building.
