Dokkoi Active's Exhibition: 'ALIENS WELCOME'
From February 27 to March 15, 2026, the Roppongi Tsutaya Bookstore in Tokyo will host the fifth solo exhibition of the talented illustrator Dokkoi Active, aptly titled "ALIENS WELCOME." This exhibition will take place in the second-floor SHARE LOUNGE, featuring original illustrations, canvas paintings, apparel, and merchandise alongside several new creations.
Dokkoi Active, with a unique background, previously spent 15 years working in promotional and event planning roles at avex, a major Japanese record label. In 2019, he transitioned into the world of illustration—an endeavor that marked a significant shift in his career. His illustrative style, characterized by a loose touch reminiscent of the 1960s and 70s, has gained attention in the realms of fashion and music, where he provides graphics for brands and events.
The Concept Behind 'ALIENS WELCOME'
The exhibition's title, "ALIENS WELCOME," is inspired by Dokkoi's personal experiences in Roppongi, a place he holds dear. During his time at avex, he often commuted through Roppongi and realized the area was bustling with foreign visitors throughout the day. This observation sparked his interest, prompting him to learn more about the neighborhood's history—particularly how it developed a unique character after World War II, influenced by the establishment of a U.S. military base.
Dokkoi relates this experience to his own journey as a newcomer in the art scene, having left a stable job to pursue his passion. He perceives himself as an 'alien' in his new role, aligning perfectly with the exhibition's title. Through this showcase, he aims to celebrate both Roppongi and his artistic evolution.
In his seven years as an illustrator, Dokkoi has focused on creating graphics that stand the test of time, choosing designs for T-shirts that are stylistically enduring, rather than merely trendy. This focus on universal appeal has become a central theme in his work, which he embodies in the pieces displayed in this exhibition.
For those who appreciate art and creativity, this exhibition promises an enlightening experience. Dokkoi invites everyone to visit and explore his artistic journey.
