A Cultural Boost for Chicago
In an impactful initiative that highlights the importance of diversity in arts funding, the Chicago's Cultural Treasures (ChiTreasures) program has announced its final round of funding. This significant move brings $3 million to a total of 77 organizations through the Culture Forward Chicago initiative, administered by IFF. The goal? To support cultural groups that represent the rich tapestry of African, Indigenous, Asian, Black, and Latin American communities.
Founded originally to address the funding gap faced by arts organizations from historically underrepresented communities, ChiTreasures aims to amplify the voices of these communities and bolster their contributions to the city’s cultural landscape. According to Vickie Lakes-Battle, IFF's Executive Director for the Chicago Metro Region, this initiative seeks to ensure that those groups who have historically been overlooked now receive the financial support they need to thrive.
Generous Funding and Broad Impact
Out of nearly 200 organizations that applied, 59 will receive a generous gift of $50,000, aimed at meeting their specific needs. In addition, 18 organizations will benefit from smaller awards of approximately $4,400. This financial aid serves as a vital resource, allowing these cultural organizations to continue their mission of creating, preserving, and promoting art stemming from their respective traditions.
Ebony Chuukwu, Senior Program Officer at Walder Foundation, highlighted the importance of such funding during these challenging times. She emphasized the need to elevate the traditions and cultures of people from disinvested backgrounds. The commitment to enhancing these organizations helps in nurturing not only the arts but also community engagement and pride.
