Smart Trash Cans Transforming Waste Management in Tokyo
On December 2, 2025,
Forcetec, a company based in Tokyo's Chiyoda district, officially launched a trial for their innovative smart trash can,
SmaGO, located in
Takanawa Park in Minato City, Tokyo. This marks the second trial of its kind in the area, following a similar initiative in November 2025 at the Takahashi Korekiyo Memorial Park. This trial will run for three months, concluding on March 3, 2026.
The Smart Solution
The
SmaGO trash can utilizes solar power to compress waste automatically to about one-fifth its original size. This advanced system is equipped with sensors that monitor fill levels, allowing waste collection services to operate more efficiently and reduce overflow and littering.
The initiative aims to support local environmental policies by enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the parks and promoting proper waste sorting. By replacing traditional bins with SmaGO units, Forcetec hopes to contribute to the efficient management of waste collection and create a more comfortable and safe environment for park goers.
Trial Objectives and Features
The specific goals for this trial include:
1. Contributing to environmental initiatives including beautification and waste sorting promotion.
2. Streamlining waste management operations.
3. Ensuring a pleasant and safe park climate for visitors.
The SmaGO units are strategically placed near the park's plaza and impress with their modern design and functionality. They not only reduce the need for frequent waste collection but also educate users on waste separation through customized wrapping designs.
Project Background
Takanawa Park is situated within walking distance from JR Shinagawa Station and serves a diverse range of community members, from kids in daycare to nearby office workers and the elderly. This inclusion makes the park a vital part of the community, demonstrating the need for efficient waste management solutions in public spaces where many gather.
Future Developments
The data collected from the trials at Takanawa Park and the previously launched Takahashi Korekiyo Memorial Park will be analyzed for improvements in cleaning and maintenance services. Forcetec is committed to enhancing public spaces and promoting sustainable urban development by creating environments where everyone can enjoy their surroundings comfortably.
Understanding SmaGO
SmaGO trash cans represent Forcetec's response to environmental concerns, featuring a smart IoT design that functions through solar energy. The ability to compress rubbish significantly lessens the operational burden on waste collection teams while also allowing real-time updates about waste levels, which ultimately leads to a decrease in the number of trips needed for collection.
In previous implementations, such as in the Omotesando and Harajuku areas of Tokyo, there was a reported 75% reduction in collection frequency. Similarly, in the Dotonbori area of Osaka, litter (excluding cigarette butts) was reduced by approximately 90%. This demonstrates the potential of SmaGO to revolutionize waste management in urban areas.
