Dujiangyan's Sweet Festival Kicks Off with Local Delicacies and Cultural Celebrations

Dujiangyan’s Sweet Festival: A Celebration of Culture and Local Flavors

As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, the picturesque city of Dujiangyan in Sichuan province welcomed guests to the highly anticipated Dujiangyan Sweet Festival 2026. Known for housing the world’s oldest functioning irrigation system, Dujiangyan became a vibrant tapestry of local culture and culinary delights, drawing visitors from far and wide.

The festival commenced with a spectacular lantern show, rooted in the ancient wisdom of water management that has been a cornerstone of the region for thousands of years. Giant lantern installations depicted historical figures and legends, particularly the notable Li Bing, the ancient governor who spearheaded the construction of the Dujiangyan irrigation system. This stunning showcase of creativity created an enchanting atmosphere, inviting festival-goers to immerse themselves in Dujiangyan's rich history.

Following the lantern display, the excitement continued in the ancient town of Guanxian with a bustling themed market that ran until January 3rd. This vibrant bazaar featured an array of local beverages, teas, alcoholic drinks, and culinary specialties, including five geographical indication products unique to the area, such as kiwi and Chuanxiong (a type of Sichuan herb). The market also highlighted intricate items of intangible cultural heritage, alongside unique products from various parts of Sichuan province.

Cultural Engagements
To enhance the festival experience, visitors participated in an urban orienteering game with thematic trails designed to explore ancient customs and local flavors. Participants could check in via a mini-program, collect stamps, and enjoy special promotions from collaborating vendors. This interactive approach not only provided entertainment but also encouraged a deeper connection to the local community and its traditions.

Alongside the games, a series of cultural events unfolded, showcasing intangible cultural heritage performances, interactive exhibits, and parades featuring NPC characters dressed in traditional attire. These activities further enriched the visitors' experience and stimulated consumption during the festive season.

From January 1st to 3rd, the Sustaining Water Forever Culture and Creation Industrial Park transformed into a realm of immersive, ancient-themed activities. Festival-goers had the opportunity to engage with performers clad in hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) and animal-themed costumes during parades. Attendees could navigate designated paths to check in at various points and earn “silver banknotes” through quizzes, talent shows, and other challenges. These banknotes could be exchanged for prizes or entered into raffles, enhancing the festive spirit.

Among the highlights was a special guest—a character inspired by anime and dressed as “Nine-Tails Lingjiu.” This unique figure had previously faced allegations of design copying from other tourist attractions. The original character was present in the park and participated in the parade, showcasing the authenticity and charm of original design.

Starting in January, the industrial park will also host a collection of intangible cultural heritage items and cultural products related to water management, targeting both exhibition and sale purposes as well as creating interactive experiences for the public.

Digital Innovations
As part of its modern outreach, the festival introduced an online shopping center showcasing the local sweet festival. Digital avatars rooted in Dujiangyan’s culture act as exclusive ambassadors, promoting the festival's events and available products both in-person and virtually. This blend of tradition and technology aims to reach a wider audience, ensuring that the cultural wealth of Dujiangyan is appreciated by locals and tourists alike.

Through the Dujiangyan Sweet Festival, this ancient city continues to celebrate its heritage, fostering community connections while introducing delightful local flavors to new generations. This annual event not only serves as a reminder of the city’s historical significance but also as a festival that brightens hearts and minds as we welcome the New Year.
