New Sustainable Material: Cacao Denim
On March 26, 2026, a groundbreaking sustainable fashion line called
Cacao Denim will be launched through
Shinzone's retail stores and official online platform. This innovative product utilizes upcycled cacao bean husks in collaboration with
Meiji Co., Ltd. and
Doors Co., Ltd., marking a significant step in environmentally-conscious clothing.
The development of Cacao Denim began in October 2025 as part of Meiji's initiative,
Hirake, Cacao, aimed at fully utilizing cacao's potential, including previously discarded parts. By creating new value from cacao, they aim for sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and farming communities. Many farmers in cacao-producing regions prefer durable denim workwear owing to its practicality—this influenced the materials and designs used in the Cacao Denim collection.
The Cacao Denim Collection
The initial collection will feature three key items:
- - CACAO DENIM JACKET priced at ¥39,600 (tax included)
- - CACAO DENIM PANTS at ¥34,100 (tax included)
- - CACAO DENIM SKIRT available for ¥28,600 (tax included)
Each piece comes with a unique tag that highlights Shinzone's support for the
Hirake, Cacao project, showcasing their commitment to sustainable fashion.
Sustainable Features of Cacao Denim
Cacao Denim differentiates itself as a lightweight and soft alternative to standard cotton denim. Key features include:
- - Use of anindrin-free indigo dyes, contributing to eco-friendly practices
- - Aluminum buttons and rivets made entirely from recyclable materials
- - Innovations like laser technology to reduce water usage in processing
- - An estimated 8% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional denim
- - Biodegradable fibers from plant-derived materials, enhancing sustainability
Cacao Denim is crafted from a specialized bioplastic made from cacao husks, developed in collaboration with
Hemisphere Co., Ltd. This bioplastic is designed to withstand the conventional denim manufacturing processes. A two-layered yarn structure was developed, which wraps the cacao fiber core with cotton, ensuring durability and comfort.
The Development Journey
Shinzone emphasizes that one crucial challenge during the development of Cacao Denim was maintaining consistency in the yarn's thickness and avoiding uneven textures. Aloof concerns regarding achieving a balance between lightness and strength were resolved through their design experiments, leading to a comfortable and visually appealing fabric.
Consumers and Community Engagement
The brand encourages consumers not only to explore the new collection but to also engage with the sustainable practices behind it. Shinzone aims to make their denim accessible to everyone, promoting unisex designs and inviting potential new customers to interact with the garments firsthand.
Through the launch of Cacao Denim, Meiji and its partners pursue a dual purpose: enhancing the livelihoods of cacao farmers while contributing to a circular economy and reducing environmental impacts. This initiative embodies a promising fusion of fashion and sustainability—proof that style can indeed reflect a commitment to our planet.
