Truth Initiative and NAACP Partner to Improve Quit Resources for Black Communities

Truth Initiative and NAACP Join Forces to Combat Tobacco Addiction

In a significant move towards addressing health disparities, the Truth Initiative® and the NAACP have announced a strategic partnership aimed at tackling the impact of tobacco and nicotine addiction in Black communities. This collaborative effort seeks to provide comprehensive support and proven resources to foster successful quit attempts among individuals in these historically marginalized groups.

The Partnership Goals

The alliance combines the NAACP’s extensive advocacy for racial and health equity with the Truth Initiative’s status as the largest nonprofit focused on ending nicotine addiction. By integrating their unique perspectives and resources, the two organizations aim to deliver culturally relevant cessation programs, expand access to valuable quitting resources, and push for supportive policies that protect the health of youth and communities of color.

Dr. Kendric Dartis, the Vice President of Outreach and Engagement at Truth Initiative, emphasizes the importance of this collaboration. He states, “For decades, the tobacco industry has strategically exploited Black communities through predatory marketing tactics, necessitating the provision of effective and accessible resources to encourage individuals to quit and reclaim their health.”

The Current Landscape of Tobacco Use

The alarming statistics around tobacco use in Black Americans indicate a pressing need for targeted interventions. Currently, about 11.7% of Black adults smoke, almost on par with the general adult population at 11.5%. However, the toll of tobacco-related illnesses is disproportionately higher among Black Americans, with approximately 45,000 deaths annually linked to tobacco use. Further complicating the landscape, more than 80% of Black smokers have reported using menthol cigarettes, which are more addictive and harder to quit.

Dr. Chris T. Pernell from the NAACP’s Center of Health Equity highlights the systematic targeting of Black communities by the tobacco industry, particularly through menthol products. This partnership aims to combat these injustices by reframing quitting as not just a personal health decision but as a form of healing and empowerment within these communities.

Actionable Steps Forward

The collaboration will enhance the existing Breath of Freedom coalition, part of the broader Culture + Cessation Collective, which brings community-based leaders together to address nicotine addiction among marginalized populations. Key initiatives include:
1. Community Discussions and Workshops: Hosting free educational sessions that discuss the effects of smoking and vaping, tailored specifically for Black communities.
2. Reframing Cessation: Promoting the idea of quitting as an act of liberation and resistance to tobacco industry exploitation.
3. Advocacy: Engaging in stronger advocacy efforts to eliminate menthol and flavored tobacco products that disproportionately affect youth and communities of color.
4. Local Outreach: Developing grassroots campaigns to mobilize community voices and push for improved policies against the tobacco industry’s targeted marketing practices.
5. Access to Resources: Expanding the reach of the EX Program—created by Truth Initiative in collaboration with Mayo Clinic—which offers proven, evidence-based support that can enhance quitting success rates significantly.

Since the launch of this initiative, over 17,000 Black Americans have joined the EX Program, with millions exposed to campaigns reinforcing the message that quitting is attainable with the right support.

Commitment to Community Support

Dr. Dartis further emphasizes, “No one should have to bear the burden of quitting alone. Through this partnership, we aim to dismantle stigma and foster a supportive community for those embarking on their quitting journey.”

The collaboration between Truth Initiative and the NAACP not only focuses on health equity but also seeks to empower individuals in their quests for better health and well-being. By combining resources and aim, both organizations are poised to make a substantial impact on the fight against tobacco addiction in Black communities.

Conclusion

As the partnership unfolds, it is set to become a significant force in the realm of public health, advocating for change and fostering healthier lives within communities that have been historically marginalized. The work ahead is challenging, but with collaboration rooted in understanding and support, there is hope for a future where tobacco addiction is no longer a barrier to health and equity.
