Conestoga Capital Advisors Unveils Leadership Transition for Small Cap Growth Strategy by 2025

Conestoga Capital Advisors: A Strategic Shift in Leadership

In an important move for the future of their investment strategies, Conestoga Capital Advisors, LLC has officially announced leadership changes for its flagship Small Cap Growth strategy. Effective at the end of 2025, Derek Johnston will take over the reins as Co-Portfolio Manager, succeeding Joe Monahan, who will transition to a supporting role before his retirement in late 2026.

Derek Johnston, a Partner and experienced Portfolio Manager, has been part of Conestoga since 2015. His ascent to Co-Portfolio Manager of the Small Cap Growth strategy marks a significant turn in his career after previously co-managing the SMid Cap Growth strategy since 2016. In an official statement, Bob Mitchell, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, expressed confidence in Derek's capabilities, highlighting a seamless transition that aims to benefit both the firm and its clients.

"I look forward to managing the Small Cap Growth strategy alongside Derek. His proven track record at Conestoga makes him a natural fit for this leadership role," Mitchell remarked.

Over the years, Derek has been pivotal in expanding the firm's SMid Cap Growth assets—from under $100 million to nearly $2 billion—showcasing his meticulous investment approach and dedication. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Boston College and an MBA from USC’s Marshall School of Business. Additionally, he earned the Chartered Financial Analyst® certification in 2003, underscoring his expertise in the investment field.

Derek reflected on his nearly decade-long journey at Conestoga, emphasizing the firm's commitment to a disciplined investment strategy and the warm culture that has supported his growth. “The collaborative environment we have fosters excellence, and I am eager to continue this legacy with our clients,” he said.

On the other side of this transition, Joe Monahan, who has been integral to Conestoga since 2008, will continue to be involved with the firm as he co-manages the Micro Cap Growth strategy and provides analytical support. Monahan has been a strong contributor as Co-Portfolio Manager and Director of Research since 2014, having played a substantial role in the firm’s growth—from managing less than $1 billion to more than $8 billion in assets today.

Looking ahead, David Neiderer, a Partner and Portfolio Manager who joined Conestoga in 2013, will take over the Director of Research role from Joe. David, a Wharton School alumnus and CFA Charterholder, has been acknowledged for his meaningful contributions to the firm’s research operations and investment performance.

Bob Mitchell commented, “David's leadership will elevate our research capabilities as we continue to pursue excellence in our investment strategies.” This proactive approach aims to ensure that Conestoga Capital Advisors remains at the forefront of investment management in the evolving financial landscape.

Conestoga Capital Advisors, based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, is an independent investment advisory firm renowned for its conservative growth strategies, managing over $8 billion across various portfolios. Founded in 2001, the firm has distinguished itself through its commitment to high-quality investments, fundamental research, and a long-term vision for capital appreciation for both institutional and individual investors.

The leadership shifts at Conestoga demonstrate a clear plan for sustainable growth and continuity, ensuring that clients can continue to expect the same level of dedication and performance from a firmly rooted team moving into the future.

In conclusion, as 2025 approaches, the transition in leadership at Conestoga Capital Advisors showcases their commitment to both their clients and the integrity of their investment strategies. This careful succession planning highlights the firm’s focus on maintaining high standards in investment management while adapting to the changing dynamics of the market.
