Compal Unveils Innovative Nighttime Automatic Emergency Braking Solution at Automotive World

Compal's Nighttime Automatic Emergency Braking Solution

Compal USA, based in Tokyo, Japan, is set to showcase a groundbreaking nighttime pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB) solution at the upcoming Automotive World 2025. This event will take place from September 17 to 19, 2025, at Makuhari Messe. Compal's innovative technology, featuring advanced infrared sensors and CDAT AI solutions, aims to enhance vehicle safety in low-visibility conditions, a need highlighted by new U.S. regulations.

Background: Urgent Compliance with FMVSS-127

Starting September 2029, all passenger vehicles in the United States will be required to comply with the revised Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS-127), making nighttime pedestrian AEB mandatory. These updates are designed to model real-world traffic accidents that occur in dim light, such as moonlit scenarios with minimal street lighting (0.2 lux). Vehicles traveling at speeds exceeding 65 km/h must detect pedestrians in conditions where only low beam headlights (effective range: 40m) are available.

However, current camera-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) typically detect pedestrians only within a 30m range at night. This limitation necessitates a new approach for compliance with FMVSS-127.

In response, Compal has developed a solution that merges compact infrared sensors with its proprietary CDAT AI algorithm. This advanced technology allows for high-precision recognition of pedestrians and animals even in challenging visibility conditions, greatly improving the safety of autonomous vehicles and ADAS.
