Infinium Unveils mSAF Platform to Enhance Sustainable Aviation Fuel Options
Infinium Unveils mSAF Platform
Introduction
In a significant step towards sustainable aviation, Infinium has launched its mSAF (methane-derived Sustainable Aviation Fuel) platform. This innovative product can convert various methane sources—including renewable natural gas, biogas, and flare gas—into low-carbon aviation fuel. This expansion addresses the pressing demands for diverse feedstocks in aviation's low-carbon fuel production.
Meeting the Demand for Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The aviation industry faces a growing necessity for sustainable fuel sources due to rising SAF mandates and industry commitments. Infinium's mSAF platform aims to tackle this challenge by broadening the range of inputs for fuel production. Since methane sources are abundant at landfills, farms, and wastewater treatment facilities, this new platform strategically positions Infinium to capitalize on these diverse methane streams.
CEO Robert Schuetzle emphasized that the mSAF platform represents a major evolution in Infinium's capabilities. "This development enhances our ability to implement our advanced technologies across various locations, while also supplementing our expanding eSAF business, thereby providing crucial options in low-carbon aviation fueling," he stated.
Proven Technology With Enhanced Efficiency
Infinium has honed its expertise over more than a decade in transforming gases into liquid hydrocarbons using its synthesis technology. The newly launched mSAF product leverages the company's established Fischer-Tropsch synthesis technology combined with an electric steam methane reforming system. This advanced approach allows more efficient use of feedstock and minimizes lifecycle emissions.
The proprietary Reform™ package, incorporating the electric steam methane reformer (eSMR), generates syngas with a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional methods. This novel technique avoids the combustion emissions typically linked with conventional steam methane reforming, thus promoting higher fuel yields and enhanced project economics, particularly for renewable natural gas (RNG) initiatives.
Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Impact
The introduction of the mSAF product does not imply a uniform carbon intensity across all initiatives. Each project's lifecycle emissions will be contingent upon the specific methane source and the associated production processes. Infinium collaborates with RMI, a recognized leader in energy and climate research, to ensure rigorous assessments of the mSAF market, focusing on a sustainable future for aviation.
RMI's Managing Director, Bryan Fisher, acknowledged the importance of biogas and renewable natural gas. “These areas hold significant potential for decreasing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, provided that rigorous lifecycle accounting and credible certification processes are implemented,” he explained.
Conclusion
By introducing the mSAF platform, Infinium not only expands its product offerings but also reinforces its position in the low-carbon fuel market. The move towards turning methane into aviation fuel reflects a crucial step in the journey towards achieving sustainable aviation goals. Interested stakeholders will monitor how this innovative platform can reshape the landscape of aviation fuels and contribute to global emissions reduction efforts.
