HKUST's Congregation 2025: Celebrating Remarkable Achievements
On October 18, 2025, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) proudly hosted its Congregation 2025 ceremony, honoring five exceptional individuals with Honorary Doctorates for their significant contributions to various fields. The event was presided over by HKUST Pro-Chancellor, Dr. John Chan Cho-Chak, alongside prominent university leaders, including Council Chairman Prof. Harry Shum, Court Chairman Dr. Honorable Andrew Liao Cheung-Sing, and President Prof. Nancy Ip.
The five recipients of Honorary Doctorates, recognized for their outstanding work and dedication, include:
- - Prof. Pradeep K. Khosla: Chancellor of the University of California San Diego, awarded Doctor of Engineering honoris causa.
- - Prof. Roger David Kornberg: Nobel laureate in Chemistry, honored with Doctor of Science honoris causa.
- - Mr. Liu Cixin: Acclaimed author of The Three-Body Problem, receiving Doctor of Humanities honoris causa.
- - Prof. Sir Christopher Pissarides: Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences, conferred Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa.
- - Mr. Stephen A. Schwarzman: Chairman, CEO, and Co-Founder of Blackstone, awarded Doctor of Business Administration honoris causa.
During the ceremony, Prof. Shum acknowledged the significant impact these honorary doctors have made, stating, "These five honorary doctors are trailblazing exemplars whose accomplishments have inspired the global pursuit of excellence." Their achievements motivate both faculty and students at HKUST to seek excellence, innovate, and contribute positively to society.
President Prof. Ip also celebrated not only the honorees but also the graduating class of the year. "This ceremony honors the exceptional individuals you have become – critical thinkers, visionary innovators, and compassionate leaders poised to shape our future," she remarked. She emphasized the importance of hard work, perseverance, and contributing meaningfully to humanity, urging graduates to continue their journey of learning and development.
In honoring the legacy of HKUST's founding president, Prof. Chia-Wei Woo, President Ip expressed hope that the Class of 2025 would carry the university's mission forward, bridging Eastern and Western cultures through innovation and leadership.
The graduation of this year's class marked a significant milestone for HKUST, with a global alumni community that has now surpassed 111,000. The university conferred 6,929 academic degrees during this ceremony, including 2,620 bachelor’s degrees, 3,824 master’s degrees, 485 doctoral degrees, and professional doctorate degrees.
Adding to the ceremony's prestige was the presentation of the
Michael G. Gale Medal for Distinguished Teaching to Prof. Ben Chan Yui-Bun, an Associate Professor in Engineering Education. This medal is given in recognition of extraordinary contributions to education within the university.
Energizing conversations took place during the event, particularly a captivating fireside chat with Mr. Schwarzman and Prof. Shum, titled "Lessons from a Life of Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Giving Back." This discussion highlighted the role of entrepreneurial vision in education and societal advancement. Mr. Schwarzman noted the essentiality of attracting talent in an increasingly competitive landscape and the importance of educational advancements in AI and the humanities.
In a shift toward the imaginative realm, awardee Mr. Liu Cixin engaged with students at the Lee Shau Kee Library. He offered insights into the creative process behind his celebrated novel,
The Three-Body Problem, discussing themes relevant today, such as inspiration, the future of sci-fi literature, and the intersection of technology and creativity.
