Milton Hershey School Celebrates the 2025 Alumni of the Year with Honorees Jim and John Hanawalt

Milton Hershey School Honors 2025 Alumni of the Year

Milton Hershey School (MHS) recently announced its esteemed 2025 Alumni of the Year: James E. Hanawalt '65 and John B. Hanawalt '70. Their recognition highlights decades of commitment to community leadership and service, reflecting the school's core values and long-lasting impact on society. Sadly, James, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on June 26, 2024, and is honored posthumously for his contributions.

A Legacy of Service and Leadership

James and John Hanawalt exemplified the spirit of giving back to their communities. Jim dedicated 37 years of his professional life to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board's Human Resources Department, while John made his mark in the financial sector following his studies at Susquehanna University. Rooted in the lessons they learned at MHS, both brothers achieved significant career milestones, yet their heartfelt commitment to serving others is what truly sets them apart.

MHS President Pete Gurt '85 noted, "While the Hanawalt brothers had fruitful careers, their hearts for service set them apart. Jim and John remained close to Hershey—never forgetting their roots, which allowed them to stay connected to their alma mater in impactful ways." The brothers have played crucial roles in student recruitment initiatives in Central Pennsylvania and have organized various celebrations and community service projects through the MHS Alumni Association.

Empowering Youth Through Sports

In response to a growing demand for youth sports, Jim orchestrated the Paxtonia Basketball Association for 22 years, providing opportunities for both boys and girls to participate actively. Under his leadership, a dedicated team of 200 volunteers, including coaches and support staff, ensured personalized attention and guidance for the young athletes.

John also devoted his time and resources to numerous organizations such as his church, Habitat for Humanity, the United Way, the American Cancer Society, and the Optimist Club, demonstrating his commitment to community enhancement and support.

Give Back to MHS

Both brothers consistently sought ways to give back to MHS, furthering the school's mission. Jim spearheaded a tailgate party before Homecoming games and was a vital organizer of Easter parties and summer pool gatherings, which entertained generations of MHS students. Their influence extended to the National Honor Society (NHS) students, who learned the vital importance of community service through the Hanawalts' exemplary conduct.

In their roles as volunteers for the MHS Admissions team, the brothers advocated for the value of an MHS education to prospective students, ensuring that the institution's legacy continues through new generations. Reflecting on their recognition as Alumni of the Year, John shared heartfelt sentiments about their journey: "The magic of Milton Hershey School is what I was able to do for my children and my communities. We never sought this. I was very surprised to receive the call, but I wish Jim was here with me. He didn't do anything for accolades. He was all about helping others, and he taught me to do the same."
