Completion of New Timber Construction Store Using LC-core Method in Tama City

A New Era of Timber Construction in Tama City

In Tama City, Tokyo, a new rental store has been successfully completed utilizing the innovative LC-core construction method. This project, managed by Life Design Kabaya Co., Ltd., an integral part of the Japan CLT Technology Research Institute franchise network, marks a significant milestone in sustainable building practices. The store will be delivered on March 26, 2026, and is geared towards adding a fresh dynamic to the local community.

The rental store features a unique single-story design that embraces the natural warmth of wood, characteristic of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) construction. The original LC-core method adopted for this project not only retains excellent seismic performance typical of traditional CLT structures but also maximizes usable space while minimizing the number of CLT panels required. This method enables the creation of expansive interiors that were previously more difficult to achieve with conventional construction methods.

Initially, the project was contemplated using the standard 2x4 construction method; however, due to the design requirements that called for significant open space, the decision was made to employ the LC-core method instead. This method addresses the constraints of typical panel-based construction, effectively balancing aesthetic appeal with seismic safety.

The large open glass facades at the building's L-shaped corners create a seamless connection between the interior and the outdoor spaces, fostering a sense of unity. Additionally, structural elements like columns, beams, and ceilings are left exposed to enhance the room's openness, allowing patrons to appreciate the warmth and beauty of wood even after completion.

This new establishment will be operated by a globally recognized coffee chain, with expectations that it will serve as a vibrant hub for the community. The advantages of CLT, often associated with mid and high-rise buildings, are also evident in single-story projects like this one, illustrating the capability of creating high-quality spaces leveraging these materials. Moving forward, the Japan CLT Technology Research Institute aims to advocate for the wider adoption of CLT while exploring optimal applications based on project scale and purpose to enhance the material's value further.

Upcoming Structural Site Tour

On January 8, 2026, a structural site tour will be held, allowing industry professionals, including construction companies, architectural firms, and media representatives, to witness the benefits of the LC-core method firsthand. Approximately 30 attendees are expected to learn about the unique features of the LC-core construction method and the structural advantages native to CLT while examining the actual building structure.

Overview of the LC-core Method

The LC-core method is an original CLT panel construction technique co-developed by the Japan CLT Technology Research Institute in collaboration with several educational institutions and private companies. By combining conventional wooden frame construction with traditional CLT panel methods, it achieves both high strength and open spaces in buildings. This innovative approach allows for reduced construction timelines compared to reinforced concrete structures while providing the flexibility to modify floor plans in the future.
